Early in the show Bayley came in Regal's office and asked him for a Womens Title shot cause she feels shes earned it, and Regal said he'd go and ask Asuka, and if shes ok with it he'll make the match. But with Joe the NXT champion Regal came out and declared Nakamura the number 1 contender and when Joe protested it later in the night about not being asked Regal was like "You'll fight who i tell you to fight!".
Ok so he'll go and politely ask Asuka if she'll give Bayley a title match but Joe has no choice but to face who he tells him to? Felt like Regal really contradicted himself.
I asked the same thing in the NXT weekly TV discussion thread and got no response. You are absolutely right but this is just another case where logic doesn't matter because heels and faces are treated differently.
Nakamura was already no.1 contender per his match with Balor and Joe was trying to change that. Bayley wasn't the no.1 contender so nothing was etablashed. I guess that is how you can justify it
Fair point, though if you think about it, Regal surely shouldn't be asking Asuka if that's the case, because Bayley has a contractually obligated rematch, Asuka shouldn't really have a choice in whether or not the match is ok.
I didn’t see the segment, but why would Bayley even have to ask? Haven’t they established, for better or worse, that every champion has a rematch clause should they lose? So, yeah, that doesn’t sound like it makes sense according to their standards.
Bayley has a stronger claim for her match with Asuka then Nakamura has for his with Joe.
Bayley was automatically no1 contender and only didn't get her shot due to injury; Nakamura beat Balor in what wasn't even an official no1 contender's match.
That was just some piss poor writing to try and generate some last minute conflict going into TO. That being said, at least they're making an attempt at a story half-assed though it may be.
Kayfabe wise, Samoa Joe is fucking right. He earned his shot to challenge Bálor for the NXT Title, he did everything it needed to be, and it made sense.
I like Shinsuke Nakamura, but he's getting a title shot just because...yeah?
And Regal wants to strip Joe of his title if he doesn't want to put his title on the line against an underserving contender, kayfabe wise?
Fuck off, to me, William Regal looks like the Heel and Joe looks like the face who knows what's right and what's wrong.
Shinsuke Nakamura had defeated Sami Zayn, Austin Aries, and Finn Balor consecutively. He was the number one contender. I do agree though that clearly Regal gave preferential treatment to Asuka.
Are you expecting logic out of NXT anymore? :mj4 This ain't 2014 anymore, my burh. Sounds to me they literally have no idea what and how to book the storylines. This screams last minute booking :mj4
Its stupid but the only explanation can be that Regal IS being impartial here. He is a face, Asuka is face but Joe is heel. He is on good terms with Asuka and doesn't mind discussing future matches because he doesnt want to ruin a good working relationship with her.
He never liked Joe, so ofcourse he doesn't care about his approval.
You don't see the difference between Regal announcing a match without being asked by Nakamura and Bailey asking for a match? It's not a contradiction if the circumstances are different.
Bayley didn't really ask for a title match, she pretty much told Regal shes ready and wants to use her rematch clause, its not like she came in there begging for a title match and Regal approved. She has a mandatory rematch clause in her contract.
I don't think there is a gap in logic or bad writing. Regal, no matter how impartial he tried to be, will like some people more than others; that is something all humans do. Asuka has done nothing to vex Regal so he is more respectful to her.
I think the thing that needs to be understood here is they're trying to make Asuka's lack of English opaque as opposed to transparent. In other words, this is when you get creative with wrestlers by using their weakness to create angles and interview scenarios that allow them to excel with them needing to expose there biggest weakness (which is obviously the language barrier here).
It took me some time to realize this, but I have an explanation. Regal is a face GM and so naturally being an Englishmen he is a "gentlemen". Therefore, a gentlemen asks the Woman's champion what she'd like to do instead of using his "male privilege" and oppress her with his own tyranny. Asuka is a "Face" and that is key. Samoa Joe is a heel trying to tell his boss, William Regal what he wants to do. Naturally, Regal tells him otherwise. Makes sense.
If I remember correctly wasn't Joe "late" to the show and he only just showed up after regal announced the match? (Please correct me if I'm getting this mixed up)
Bayley has her rematch clause, she says she wants it to be at Brooklyn. Regal goes to Asuka and says look the match is happening at some point regardless, you happy doing it at Brooklyn.
Nakamura is number 1 contender by fact of who he beat and let's be real there is no other challenger. If my memory is correct (again correct me if I'm wrong) Joe shows up late for the show so he couldn't ask if he wanted (that night anyway). Regal is fed up with the attitude of Joe, the heel who wanted to give neither a title shot, puts him in the match the fans wants and the heel doesn't. The heel now can cut promos on how unfair it is, how he shouldn't have to defend it, Nakamura doesn't deserve it, Regal has it in for him.
Not as big an issues as its being made out to be IMO.
