I don't like Babymetal at all; however, it's probably the first time I've seen an actual currently known, played by a currently relevant band, sort of fittingly-sounding song for a WWE event in God knows how long.
Bring me the Horizon, Sleeping with Sirens, and now Babymetal? Whoever chooses music for NXT events has a much different taste than whoever does it for the main shows.
They know exactly who they're appealing to. The majority of the NXT fanbase is such a stereotype that it's not even funny. The kind of people who try to drift away from the norm - not so much that their hobbies and things they like are "weird" but just alternative. NXT, popular J-Pop, bad metalcore bands, all go hand-in-hand with the "I-think-I'm-different" culture of the west.
The only things here that are worth noting is how much of an accurate stereotype this is for most NXT fans, and how WWE know that. Smart businesspeople.
I liked the A Day to Remember song they used for the Samoa Joe/Finn Balor video package more, but I'm digging the NXT TakeOver themes in general. Keep up the good work, whoever is in charge of these choices.
Let's get real here. NXT themes are faux-alternative. They might not be Demi Lovato levels of conventional mainstream, but I'd argue they're pretty fucking mainstream. I mean, Gimmie Chocolate has over 52 million youtube views. Babymetal is pop, and not even alt-pop. Just pop. Alt-pop indicates some level of artistic merit while adopting some level of pop sensibility, and it's hard to argue BM has any artistic merit whatsoever. Especially given the nature of JapIdol culture. It's a corporate cash-grab, and as such, I guess maybe that makes it appropriate for an NXT theme?
Their choice in NXT themes has proven to be "alternate" (inverted commas) only to the extent that they aren't really alternative in a real sense at all. Maybe I'm being to cynical. I think i probably am.
Still, Oxi's point absolutly has merit, though it's awkward to address it myself as in theory I'm absolulty in the wider "alternative" bracket. I guess I'm in the "hipster-I-think-I'm-cooler-than-you" bracket? I imagine that somewhere out there there's a group of people listening to a naked lesbian, behind a frosted glass screen, beating a twix against a birdhouse containing a frightened family of wrens, to a 7/4 time signature. And I aspire to be one of them someday.

How unusually on-the-pulse of them. Babymetal just got big internationally recently, and here are WWE jumping on it while the iron is hot.
Usually you'd expect this sort of thing five years late. Remember when they were still using Limp Bizkit by 2003, or Saliva in 2007?
There's nothing particularly wrong with being a "cash grab". However, I don't see Babymetal as one. Nobody really expected them to succeed when they were first formed, or had high expectations.
It's easy to say that they look like a cash grab now, but that really ignores their origins.
The band behind Babymetal are awesome musically so it works and I enjoy them (although I do find it weird people seem to idolize these 3 teenage girls) but what amuses me more about this announcement is ADTR getting promoted by WWE after Paige dumps Kevin Skaff on Total Diva's :HA
I guess it depends on who you are & why you feel the way you do. It's not odd to idolize people who are talented, hard working, & dedicated. They did take an idea that nobody really thought would work, and turned it into a worldwide sensation.
Should be called nxt takeover rematch cause all I see is a bunch of rematches. Seriously? How long has this Balor/Joe feud been? Closing in on a year soon. Nakamura/Aries should be good tho
...I never thought I'd see the day that a song by a band like Babymetal would play during a WWE show.
