So they make the Dusty Rhodes first annual tag team classic this huge deal and then 2 singles wrestlers win it? Not only that one of whom didn't have a notable relationship with Dusty and the other is already the fucking NXT champ. What the fuck was the point? We didn't even get the heel turn.
I predict that Balor and Joe are going to win the Dusty because HHH loves to give " his guys" accolades and that the turn won't happen until after the conclusion. (I hope I'm wrong on this)
I was waiting for you to make this thread, and I agree. Wasn't the point of this to highlight the NXT Tag Team Division? But you fuck over all of the legitimate tag teams :aries2? The only good that came of this was Gable and Jordan making themselves stars in defeat. There was no reason for Balor and Joe to get that far, let alone win the whole damn thing without it leading to a heel turn or feud.
Yea so JJ (oh, that's sick) are ReadywillingGable are now super over... the only problem with that is as Zo and Cass have shown being over doesn't mean shit. They probably aren't even the number 1 contenders seeing as the Mechanics upset the Vaudevillains.
We got a couple decent matches but the final was meh and I can't help but feel like NXT as a whole wouldn't have been better off had the Dusty never happened. Only one team got over (and they were already on their way), the new tag champs lost clean already, Zo and Cass got squashed, the main event scene didn't advance any and 2 months of tv time got wasted.l
when it first happened, I was like "That really sucks. Jordan and Gable should have won"
Now, two hours later, I am in full blown irrational hate mode. This was fucking stupid. If an angle was coming out of it between Finn and Joe, then fine. But NOTHING!!!! As already mentioned, it's two single guys who don't gain a single thing from winning this tournament. Now I would rather they win it than Baron and Corbin, but neither should have been in the final. Your tag champs don't even reach the semi's???? And a TAG TEAM could have benefited from winning this tournament.
The more I think about it, the more upset I am getting about it.
I can't. We have to wait a whole week for the payoff if there is one.
You could have AT LEAST gotten us a 4-star match out of it, but you chose CORBIN and RHYNO as your opponents for Balor and Joe?
If you really wanted to give Balor and Joe the accolades, why didn't you pick a tag team that would help a our NXT champion who is struggling to adapt to the WWE style with an exciting fast paced matchup with technical prowess? Balor doesn't know how to make someone like Corbin seem exciting, meanwhile Gable and Jordan DANCED around him so, it wasn't even worth it! I can't even rewatch the match for major enjoyment because it all leads to crap, that eliminates half of the TakeOver: Respect card unrewatchable to me.
It's kind of crazy if we think about this for a second: We're arguing about TAG TEAM WRESTLING, guys. It's 20-fucking-15 and we're arguing about tag team wrestling. It's damn good to have this lost art back in the spotlight.
NOthing special sadly... there have been arguments about tag teams for the main roster since this style of booking started to run rampant there. NXT looked like a shining light for every tag team fan out there, and this suddenly happened.
Random pairings of "top faces" has mostly been a failure... and really, when you look back at the "successes", they did more to bury the division than to actually help it since it was all about that team that would never actually be a team for long. What do people really remember about the Rock and Sock connection outside of a few promos? What do people remember about Austin and HHH?
Leave the tag division to the actual teams so we can actually get a division in the spotlight again like the late 90s or the 80s. Fuck, can we even imagine the Road Warriors or Bulldogs or Hart Foundation losing to a random team without some kind of super fuckery involved?
If I could have... I would have fast forwarded through the finals. I'm saying that about NXT. They actually made me not give one fuck about a match. I just can't believe that.
They need to thank their stars they had that main event, or else this would be a much bigger shitstorm than this. But this is still the worst Takeover yet.
Probably my biggest issue with the show. I didnt even care to watch the finals to be honest, I watched the end of it just because I thought maybe Joe and Finn would turn on each other. Maybe they'll surprise me next week and have this win lead to something between the two but for tonight it soured a chunk of the show for me. Don't even know why Enzo and Cass couldn't make it in there to begin with. It felt like a good opportunity to highlight the real tag teams if they weren't planning a swerve.
For the people who can't understand why I'm pissed is because they made the Dusty seem like it meant more than ordinary wrestling angles.
Dusty loved his NXT kids and they always said if you were a finished product Dusty didn't want to have anything to do with you. So you give the cup held in his honor to 33 and 36 year old finished products, who are already over. You took a starmaker moment and gave it to your top 2 stars. Can Joe even tell a Dusty story? It's not like he was in the PC with everybody else. If this thing was called the first annual Wrestling Classic I wouldn't have had a problem with the outcome. What's next, the first annual Hot Rod Memorial Promo Battle? I bet Balor would win that too.
This just pissed me off even more. Dusty was all about his PC kids and helping them grow from the ground up. They've effectively pissed on his grave by forsaking everything that he stands for by handing the trophy to two guys who have done everything under the sun with other companies. This is reaching Warrior Award levels of fraudulence.
I said earlier:
Why give the guy with the top accolade another one that any of the other 50 dudes could use?
Right now I'm pissed and confused and highly disillusioned with NXT. Please, somebody make sense of this shit for me.
Well, um, it makes sense because um YEAH FUCK THAT NOISE.
Tonight both the Mechanics/WGTT.20 went out there and had possibly the best performances of their lives especially Gable who after tonight is the most over man in NXT. And yet they got screwed over so Finn/Joe could win it, simply so they can add fuel to the heel turn rumors, it's a joke.
Don't get me wrong tonight was an incredible show but that match left a bad taste is my mouth.
The two top babyfaces of NXT won the Classic, in the process seeding the angle for the next Takeover, and also getting several teams hugely over.
Dusty himself booked the Jim Crockett Snr. Memorial Cup to have two top faces team to win it back in the 1980s. 80s JCP and NWA are a big influence on HHH and NXT in general.
Like do you think Jordan and Gable are not better off today than they were yesterday? You don't have to win a tournament for it to get you over. You're used to WWE's pathetic KOTR tournaments, it seems.
It can't be said enough, they had the gall to book Bálor with a knee injury for "drama" instead of a way for a more deserving team to go over and not have their NXT Champion look like a scrub(not that one night of not going over everyone would be such a bad thing ) so there goes the "but they couldn't have a heel turn cause that would be disrespectful" excuse.
They wanted the women's title to main event but didn't want a NXT title match to be booked underneath it.
So instead they put Balor in the tourney with Joe (who's most likely the next title challenger) and booked them to win so they can both continue to look strong.
Still, it's definitely a bummer that they didn't use it to build up the next challengers for the tag titles, or have Gable & Jordan look strong in a losing effort against Joe & Balor at least.
Meh, keeping in kayfabe in this situation seems like a poor excuse, especially when you consider the fact that it was Cody Rhodes and not Stardust speaking on behalf of the Rhodes family. It would have been just as well if Gable/Jordon or The Mechanics won.
Worst booking NXT has done since I started watching. Completely wrong call for Bálor and Joe to win.
Originally, I had Enzo & Cass as my original picks as they are NXT's premiere good guy tag team but Jordan & Gable's momentum as of late made me change. Much more surprised Corbin & Rhyno made it to the finals than JJ & Gable not winning. Then again, I totally expected either Joe or Finn to turn. No clue what the thought-process was but not completely disappointed as those two winning definitely ensured some feel good vibes. Don't wanna be THAT guy but perhaps Enzo & Cass were the best overall choice amid the ramifications in the tag division.
Things didn't go the way I thought'd it go, to say the least. Mechanics benefited from arguably their breakout performance and the JJ/Gable combination continues to impress everyone so things can't be that bad, right?
My best guess is they wanted to remind us that these guys are NXT's top male faces for the time being and wanted to keep them protecting in the event of planning their feuds coming out of this.
With that said, they could have done something more clever than what they did in all this by either making Finn/Joe back out the tournament or one of the teams get costed the match via swerve.
Nonetheless I enjoyed the matches that Gable/Jordan and The Mechanics got to have almost solely because they came out smelling like roses in defeat so I'm not mad.
once they teamed the top two babyfaces together (one of them the champion) in a tag tournament it was obvious that they were winning the whole thing. would be like teaming cena and reigns in a tournament on the main roster and not expecting them to run through every tag team or rock and austin together in a tag tournament in late 2000 and not expecting them to run them everyone or hogan and warrior in 1990 and expecting them not to win it
my issue was corbin and rhyno beating gable and jordan..that was completely pointless. those guys should have made the final and if they were to lose put on a memorable match and lose in spectacular fashion
2 guys who are 10+ year vets and have won Tag Team gold on multiple occasions, never with each other, in multiple company's across the world winning a tag team tournament against a bunch of up and coming rookies doesn't make sense?
Listen I know you hate the NXT 5 and all, but it was probably best 2 established popular guys won to have a feel good moment.
I'm just as pissed as you that Gable and Jordan didn't at least make it to the finals. I can make logic to understand why Joe and Bálor won, but there was absolutely no reason for Corbin and Ryno to make it to the finals, except that they wanted a garuntee that whoever Joe and Bálor faced to got booed. If Gable and Jordan were in the finals both teams would have gotten cheered, which wold be fine, but they probably wanted a clear face/heel dynamic. In all honesty I would have liked the tag champs and another team to set up the next tag title match in the finals.
We probably get Joe and Balor challenging the Vaudvillians for the tag belts on tv and that's when the turn happens I'm guessing.
And yet many of us here are fans of Balor and Joe... the problem is, is that the booking was still beyond stupid. This is a tag team tournament.. not a "your two favourites teamed together!" tournament. This was classic idiotic WWE booking rearing its ugly head in NXT.
People are saying that Balor/Joe should've won are ignoring A) the fact that they shouldn't have been in the Dusty Rhodes TAG TEAM Classic in the first place and B) they beat 2 heel teams, they easily could've had them cheated out of it C) if the whole purpose was to push the main event scene, why didn't we get a heel turn?
It was booked so it wouldn't overshadow the divas main event. If someone turned everyone would be talking about that, instead they hoped everyone would be talking about Bayley/Sasha 2.
So Balor and Joe won? Surely that makes sense, in a tournament where the Nxt Champion is in with one of the best wrestlers in the last 10 years they had to win or it devalues the Nxt Championship. I think it sets up Balor/Joe if anything
Edit: it also keeps Corbin within touching distance of good keeping him strong
Wouldn't have minded too much if Gable/JJ were at least in the finals. But jobbing to Rhyno/Corbin especially after getting THAT type of a reaction was just :ti
It was a one match card... most of the booking for the rest of the matches was beyond stupid to me. Two non tag team teams won their matches against BETTER tag teams. No excusing that shit booking.
Asuka's debut was... meh.
Crews over Breeze was a given, but still, the look beats the guy that deserves a fucking win and a push first.
But, that woman's match is all that needed to be good for the rest of this card to be redeemed. So they didn't give one shit about the rest of the card and put it all on that. Good move in the end, because the only thing we will remember about this Takeover is that match.
