Currently 3 basses, 2 guitars. All Fenders or Squiers. Don't gig on guitar, but for basses I've got a super lightweight Gallien Krueger head - 500w, 4lbs (!!!), and a Barefaced Compact cab. Real portable but deceptively loud.

Squiers being decent these days is a curse, they're cheap enough that I can buy one pretty much whenever but don't end up keeping them. Got one that just has the sweetest neck & pickups, unbelievable that I paid well under 300 for it.

I remember when I first learnt to play the guitar around the age of 13 - I was so fucking clueless that I was playing the strings with my fret hand. I thought 'wow this is fucking awkward' then I got my head out of my arse and started playing Oasis songs for a few weeks. After I learned how to palm mute, it was like I had discovered buried treasure. After learning Iommi riffs it was like I had discovered a cure for cancer amongst that buried treasure.

I still get a smug sense of satisfaction when I work out a Rancid bass line, after over a decade of playing. It's not a band I listen to a lot, but those lines, man. Fuckin' Matt Freeman.

I've owned an acoustic guitar for about 7 years now. I've never learned to play it, in fact it's strung the wrong way and I have never bothered to string it the right way...

Gear thieves are the dirt worst, take my money, take my car, take the missus but leave my damn axe alone.
A friend of mine had a vintage Ampeg Dan Armstrong Bass stolen. I think it was a 72

I guess the Trace Elliot stack was too heavy. It was in the garage in his back yard and the garage door was broke and would not lock. He would have people over and just open it right in front of people he barely knew. I refuse to leave my gear over there for that reason.

It's cool that you teach. Do you see many students that are actually interested in becoming a great technical player or mostly just wanting to be able to play their favorite songs. I play mostly metal now. I was pretty good about 10 years ago and was putting in the 10 hour practice days, but it takes so much disciple to play shred. Who are your favorite players?

right now its just mostly people who want to be able to play some songs, most of them are older and always wanted to learn but never quite got around to its so starting from scratch, which suits me for teaching. Have 2 students who are a little more advanced and wanting learn some weird open tuning and different folk styles.
After my SG got stolen instead of replacing it I got a good Taylor acoustic and got hooked on learning different styles on it (open tunings, irish trad, flamenco, gypsy music) so got really into players like John Fahey, Davey Graham, Django Reinhardt, Robbie Basho. Really just like anyone with unique styles, trying to figure out some African styles atm.
On electric theres a million guys I love from Robert Fripp to James Williamson (Stooges), fuck Id be here all day trying to list them all.

Used to teach drum circles to kids too and there was one kid who came in cold and picked it up straight away, barely 3 years later the kid is a complete virtuoso, pissing out blastbeats like nothing, better than I ever was at the drums. He put the work in but its fascinating how some people just pick it up so easy.

I have a friend like that on the piano. He was playing Mozart in less than 6 months practicing maybe 3 hours a day. It drove me insane. He is also very much a natural on guitar, but not as much as he is on piano. I was having to put in ungodly hours practicing just to keep up and he would barely even be trying. I could literally hum an idea to him and he would bring it to life. I encouraged him so much, but he never could stay interested for too long even with such ability.

I own a Music Man StingRay bass guitar, a Fender Stratocaster and a Yamaha electric piano. Tie those all together with a computer equipped running garageband (or another music editing software) and a M-Audio Fast Track Pro and you can make some pretty cool music
