It's cool that you teach. Do you see many students that are actually interested in becoming a great technical player or mostly just wanting to be able to play their favorite songs. I play mostly metal now. I was pretty good about 10 years ago and was putting in the 10 hour practice days, but it takes so much disciple to play shred. Who are your favorite players?
right now its just mostly people who want to be able to play some songs, most of them are older and always wanted to learn but never quite got around to its so starting from scratch, which suits me for teaching. Have 2 students who are a little more advanced and wanting learn some weird open tuning and different folk styles.
After my SG got stolen instead of replacing it I got a good Taylor acoustic and got hooked on learning different styles on it (open tunings, irish trad, flamenco, gypsy music) so got really into players like John Fahey, Davey Graham, Django Reinhardt, Robbie Basho. Really just like anyone with unique styles, trying to figure out some African styles atm.
On electric theres a million guys I love from Robert Fripp to James Williamson (Stooges), fuck Id be here all day trying to list them all.
Used to teach drum circles to kids too and there was one kid who came in cold and picked it up straight away, barely 3 years later the kid is a complete virtuoso, pissing out blastbeats like nothing, better than I ever was at the drums. He put the work in but its fascinating how some people just pick it up so easy.
