I was a huge Chili Peppers fan pre-BSSM. Back when George Clinton was producing their albums and they 'had their noses to the funk stone'. Chilis could do a lot of things that Jane's Addiction couldn't in terms of crossing genres, which ultimately ended in them finding a formula that earned them immense success. I don't particularly like the new material as much though myself.
I don't think very many people are familiar with their early material, but it certainly adds to their credibility as artists in my eyes.
Jane's Addiction are another act with a limited body of work and outside of Ritual and Shocking I rarely listen their other albums. Ritual de lo Habitual is one of the greatest albums ever made though. For real.
