The Beatles were a crafty marketing trick first, everything else was secondary, and the large majority of their influence on music derived from that marketing, not the music itself.

Lennon's and Paul's solo stuff >>> The Beatles.

Guess what? Any music that has become a part of mainstream society has been marketed in some sort of way. I don't even need to give examples of the countless of music acts this applies to. Just because they've been effected by marketing doesn't automatically negate all the influence they've had on music for the past 30-40 years. That isn't even a legitimate argument for influence because I guarantee that any band you name that you like that was popular to a large degree I could argue that their influence was also effected by how they were marketed.

Music just like any other form of entertainment is a business. Never forget that.

True, but my point is the majority of their fans are those who have never listened to anything outside of what is on the radio these days aka adolescent pre-teens/teenagers. That's hardly a base to have any sort of proper recognition as an artist. Have they ever had any professional well respected music sites or reviewers praise their music? Are they listened to and rated by those of us who aren't just the casual "I'll listen to whatever is force fed through to me" listeners? The answer is a resounding no on both sides.

That goes without saying, but I find Beatles the most radical example of that, and put them in the same basket with Michael Jackson, for example. That's why I said "The Beatles were a crafty marketing trick first, everything else was secondary". But hey, check this out, the Rolling Stones, almost the same thing, and yet I enjoy them infinitely more.

That maybe true, but we don't know that, very old generations can say the same thing about big majority of us and our relations with the music of the 20s, 30s, 40s, etc.

I agree with this post.

You could argue that their earliest stuff was cookie cutter which i'd agree with, you can speculate that some of the music was progaganda driven, but the 'Marketing' argument applies to any brand that's influential in the public eye regardless of the level of artistic integrity, it's a medium that (when done correctly) helps expose your art to people that otherwise might not have payed attention. It's one thing to subjectively dislike their music, but you can't negate the fact that their music touched several generations, and were one of the biggest factors in changing the landscape of both pop culture and pop music in general. The Beatles took a very conventional genre and molded it into something different. Bands like the Moody Blues were sorta doing the same thing, but the Beatles had the fanbase to overturn an established stigma in a significant way. Their legacy is entirely justified and merited.

When it comes to the solo stuff. Eh. I think John Lennon is great, but i've never been a huge fan of Paul's (outside of a few tracks) since he's always been the traditionalist and that was reflected in his music. His song "Wild Life" he did with The Wings is probably the only time he's ever impressed me as a singer. George Harrison's All Things Must Pass however is as good as any Beatles album imho.

I net I would have liked The Beatles if I grew up in the 60's but I didn't. To me their music is bad and I don't get the appeal.

I dud however grow up during Nirvana and they are still crap. Kurt Cobain is the most overrated musician of all time. He was just a whiny pussy who killed himself and made mostly crappy songs. I seriously like two Nirvana songs.

U2 and not because they suck but because they aren't great. I like a few of their songs but I have none of them on my ipod because I don't ever think I want to listen to U2 right now.

This thread is based on opinions and it makes no sense to get angry because someone doesn't like music you do. I listen to obscure stuff that people either don't know or don't like and I don't care. The fact that I think The Beatles suck doesn't effect how much you enjoy them.

Re: Most over-rated musical acts of all time

I don't think anyone is getting angry, it's just shooting the shit. Not the first time Chismo and I have had a differing opinion, but I still respect him as a poster. Makes for stimulating discussion.

No one got angry, except for that MJ mark.

And yeah, U2 is another case, I agree with Dark Church.

Yeah with Nirvana i used to be huge into them as a teen but as i got older i soured on them abit.

I can't feel sorry for Cobain either. Dude had a young daughter and still went and topped himself, so selfish.

Kobra, please. Michael Jackson's albums discography can't even touch that of Prince, David Bowie, or Madonna for that matter.
