New Nine Inch Nails -Hesitation Marks. It's available for free streaming on the itunes app right now.
Surprisingly solid. After listening to the leaked poppy track "Everything", I was worried that this would suck, but it ended up being the only subpar track. Some of my favorite tracks on here are the ones that harken back to the funkier bits on The Fragile; Standout and favorite track All Time Low
(track 5) is like a concoction of the 70s disco era mixed with late 80s/ early 00's Reznor, his high pitch vocals sounding almost R&B-ish at times. Satelite
(track 8) sounds like Trent's channeling Prince, but it's extremely effective and catchy as hell.. second personal favorite so far. Find My Way
(track 4) will surely be the long-term standout as it's one of the classic lighter numbers in the NIN cannon, reminding me of HTDA's 'A Drowning' in chord progression and overall feel. Not sure how I feel about the prayer bit in that song though, kinda odd of Trent given his blasphemous past. Aside from the mentioned tracks.. 2, 6, 12 and the lead single (track 3) are also standouts for me.
This is obviously Trent playing it safe, making an album that isn't too experimental yet not too straight forward ether. It feels in many ways like a return to form paying tribute to his older self with a layed back approach rather than all out aggressive which isn't necessarily a bad thing. (people criticized With Teeth because the angst seemed forced for a man pushing his 40's, so maybe it's a good thing that he's going in a new direction). Hesitation Marks isn't breaking new grounds, but it's certainly an album that's been worth the wait for any NIN fan.
For those interested, this is it in full.
