Covers Better Than The Original

Songs are covered all the time, and usually the original artist's rendition is still regarded as the best. But sometimes a cover can surpass the original. So, any covers you find better than the original? I'm sure we'll get some obvious answers like Johnny Cash's 'Hurt' and Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower', but hopefully some obscure hidden gems too.

I'll get the ball rolling:

Elliott Smith - Because (The Beatles)
Spoiler for Because:

The Exies - Once In A Lifetime (Talking Heads)
Spoiler for Once In A Lifetime:

Joshua Radin - Only You (Yazoo)
Spoiler for Only You:

Battleme - Hey Hey, My My (Neil Young)
Spoiler for Hey Hey, My My:

Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis)
Spoiler for Wonderwall:

Good call on Voivod...and Pink Floyd are awesome so that's saying something.

Re: Covers Better Than The Original

I don't think the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt was better, it was certainly great and the video struck an emotional chord, but both versions had different yet equally powerful significance to them. Trent's is definitely the bleaker version, but the arrangement was masterful and his delivery evoked complete sincerety and pain. I felt both guys on their respective versions, but I think Trent's remains the best.

I'll try to post much more in the coming days, but for now i'll leave you with a few interesting covers I stumbled across recently. I wouldn't say that the Depeche Mode cover is better due to the vocals, but the production is definitely sharper and more intricately layered.

Spoiler for :

You are my Sunshine - Jimmy Davis cover

Wicked Game-Chris Isaak cover

Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode

Sailing - Christopher Cross

Re: Covers Better Than The Original

I'm not liking this Enjoy The Silence cover at all blarq. Fuck you for posting it I want my 5 minutes back. I think you should watch 5 minutes of Drive to make it up to me.

anyways

the first cover off the top of my head that I think of I think is better than the original is Van Halen's cover of The Kink's You Really Got Me.

Voivod needs more love. There are more since Piggy's death but seriously the band should be getting the same recognition of the likes of Slayer, Metallica or Death but whatever...

I remember some more.

Duran Duran - Thank You (Led Zeppelin)
Spoiler for :

UB40 - Can't help falling in love with you (Elvis)
Spoiler for :

Pet Shop Boys - Always on my mind (Brenda Lee)
Spoiler for :

Dinosaur jr. - Goin Blind (Kiss)
Spoiler for :

Melvins also have a great version of Goin Blind

Ulver - Solitude (Black Sabbath)

Must be my years being a stubborn audiophile. The downtempo minimalism approach works great on really good headphones, but to each their own. Vocals don't touch Gahan's performance, that's what makes the original better to me. (Violator can't be fucked with).

Instead of watching 5 minutes of Drive, can I just play the track "real human being.. and a real hero" off of Youtube? The song seeped through my skull when I first watched the movie and tortured me for weeks. I think it'll more than make up for the hell you just put yourself through.

Seether's "Careless Whisper" > Wham's.
Best cover I have heard in a long time.

Yes. Suck it. And stare at Gosling while you're at it.
