Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

I'm not as big of a Metallica fan as I used to be, but Master Of Puppets is their best IMO.

I'm not going to pretend it's as good as Master of Puppets but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Metallica have constantly evolved, in order to stay fresh, try new things, and IMO "The outlaw town" is fucking amazing.

Agree with both here, Load is a very underrated and enjoyable album. Obviously extremely different, but there's some gems on there that most people forget about due to them being on a 'lesser' album. ReLoad isn't quite as good, but still some good tracks and I mark for The Unforgiven II.

Ride the Lightning.

I'm also probably the only human being who can really enjoy a few tracks off of "St. Anger" such as the title track, some kind of monster, and frantic. I feel that shit from time to time, same with Death Magnetic (which I'd honestly say is their best since Puppets).

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

St. Anger is nowhere near as bad as some say it is, though that snare drum can be damn annoying. The first two tracks are pretty awesome. Surprised someone has actually voted for it as their best album though.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

St. Anger could have been a good album if the songs weren't so damn repetitive and long. Some of them just repeat themselves so much that I just get bored of listening to them. As for ReLoad, I agree that most people just shit all over that album but I do like some of the tracks. The first 5 are great to listen to in the car especially FUEL.

Let's be fair, Master Of Puppets was just a rehashed Ride The Lightning.

The production on Justice is really, really poor. It's not a bad recording per se, but the mix kills it. I do think it drags too, but it has some classic songs.

I think the problem is when it got to the 90s, quality control dipped. Black Album can lose a song or two, and Load/Reload can lose an entire albums worth, in that situation that decade would have been full of good shit. The 2000s brought back that anger, but the songs are lacking. Fair play for them trying new things, but IMO they just didn't pull it off post-self titled.

2 stonewall classics and 1 that only fell slightly short is a fucking strong achievement, though. The step up they made after Kill 'Em All rightly makes them one of the most influential bands in their genre.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

the correct answer is any of the first 4, probably Lightning or MoP but fuck it, Im voting for Kill Em All cos its not getting any love and if I could only hear one metallica album for the rest of my life its honestly that one. Just heard the others too many times and I love the raw early thrash vibe and production (the guitar tone cuts right through), plus its got 4 Horsemen, my fave 'tallica tune.

Load has a couple of alright songs but loads of shit ones and loads of meandering jams that dont go anywhere, St Anger is dogshit, Garage days is actually pretty damn great but none of the tunes are as good as their originals (tbf they have great taste in covers).

its a fair point but the production has honestly become my favorite thing about it, its so weird and thin that it gives the whole album a real eerie vibe and atmosphere that sets it apart from the others

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

The glaring omission there was the inaudible bass. You could only hear it on "To Live Is to Die", which was basically Cliff's work.

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

you can find a remixed version online of AJFA with the bass turned up but I think it loses the charm and atmosphere.

also, everyone needs to check out the 33rpm version of Ride The Lightning, it sounds like a montrously heavy crust doom band

Re: What Is Your Favorite Metallica Album???

I love some terribly produced records (also have the first DRI record, 22 songs on a 7", sounds awful) which has never bothered me. The Justice production just sounds 'wrong', which is worse than 'bad' in my book. I guess at this stage I'm not going to grow to like it, but it's good some people do. I just feel like the songs deserve better.

EDIT: should point out that I'm a bassist, and while it's not what I listen for in a record, it's a big deal to my musical brain when it's not where I'd expect it to be.

I listen to records at the wrong speed all the time, mostly because the speed isn't printed on the label half the time anymore, and it improves maybe 75% of bands I listen to that way. It's like owning way more Eyehategod.

Master of Puppets. Barring the Black Album (which I like not so much for the music but for memories of a summer camping trip that I have associated with it), nothing from the later releases appeals to me much.
