OK, so the album was influential, but that's in hindsight. What did Nas do on that album that was any different than any other New York rapper in that era? Why is it considered better than others?

Who was rapping with those concepts on that level before Nas? I'm not saying he invented the style, but more like he took Rakim/BDK's/Kool G/etc concepts and made a better album which is largely due to the production. I never bump RTD anymore, or MATW (I tried giving it another shot a few months ago and I couldn't enjoy it), the beats sound dated in all honesty. I think I voted Ready to Die maybe once or twice this entire tournament. Tracks like Life's a Bitch (AZ with one of the most underrated verses of all time on that), New York State of Mind, Halftime will live forever.

I don't think you can deny Illmatic's impact, or at least popularity in the rap scene, and I think everyone knew it'd be in the final before nominations were even made. It's certainly got to be considered up there as far as influential 90s hip hop records go. I just think 36 Chambers is a better album.

Nobody's discrediting 36 Chambers, I'd put it on the same level as Illmatic and probably higher in terms of influence when you consider that the album came out a year before Illmatic. "The Big Four" in Enter the 36, Illmatic, RTD and OB4CL all are in the same tier imo for East Coast rap. Of course, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back and Long Live the Kane are in their own tier too, I'm just talking about 90s only.

Nah I know, I was just saying why I voted for Wu even knowing Illmatic's influence.

If you consider the Wu solo albums like OB4CL, LS, etc as part of 36 Chambers legacy, you could make a fairly good case for it being the most influential 90s rap album, thinking about it. It's just a shame so much 80s shit got overlooked in this tournament (expected it, though).

I was already a big fan of the East Coast sound, so by the time Illmatic was released it totally slid under my radar because it came across as the same old - same old.

Nas was like 18 or 19 when he wrote Illmatic, that's insane. But I think that Illmatic is looked at with great fondness because it essentially revived NY Rap.

But, I vote for 36 Chambers.. Imo, it was just a better record. And had more of an impact (again imo).

Not the lyrical delivery, not the back tracks which were essentially just New York Jazz loop laden just like most of the rest of the East Coast acts of that time. The lyrics are good/great, I'll give him that. The blend of street and spirit was kinda interesting but not material that hadn't been touched on before by other artists.

This album isn't even in my top 100, sorry guys. But I'm a fucking eccentric sometimes, so what am I missing?

Beats...10/10. Rhymes....10/10. What else you need? The album ain't gonna cure cancer, it's music.
