Re: WF GOAT Rap Album Tournament - FINALS (Round 5)

OK, so seeing as how there are really only two albums up for discussion here...could somebody please explain to me the mass appeal of Nas' Illmatic album. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the record at all, but to me there's nothing really new or unique or particularly appealing about it. Not the lyrical delivery, not the back tracks which were essentially just New York Jazz loop laden just like most of the rest of the East Coast acts of that time. The lyrics are good/great, I'll give him that. The blend of street and spirit was kinda interesting but not material that hadn't been touched on before by other artists.

This album isn't even in my top 100, sorry guys. But I'm a fucking eccentric sometimes, so what am I missing?

I don't think you've researched the impact Illmatic had on the genre if you don't understand it's legacy/appeal. Hell, I go back and forth between It Was Written and Illmatic, but Illmatic is so far ahead of that album in terms of legacy/influence. It's the exact same with Enter the 36. I think Wu-Tang Forever is better, but 36 is so far ahead of it in everywhere besides the music.

It's impact is extremely exaggerated. People act like it set the hip-hop world on fire after some terrible years or something but no, it's just your run off the mil New York album with better lyricism and great production. It wasn't even a commercial success. 2 years to go gold and 7 for platinum. You wanna talk impact? Ready to Die had a bigger impact as it brought New York to the focus after the west coast had taken over with g-funk and Dr. Dre/Snoop's successful albums.

I mean, you just have to go to wiki to see the large section about it's influence. If you don't trust wiki, go look up various rappers talking about it. The Documentary is filled with Illmatic references, and that's a west coast rapper talking about it. That's just one example
