Nah I reckon he got pretty far, more than I thought he would actually; but those who dislike him are a bit biased and overreact on their opinions about him. He's not the best, but not as bad as some make him out to be.

Again though, that's an influential album for sure, but did it make that huge impact? It wasn't a genre defining record, but it did definite that sub-genre of hip hop, I guess. Is this an arbitrary distinction? I don't know, it's just the way I see it. A record can be important without being a classic, and it can be musically amazing without necessarily hitting that classic status. It's kind of like the original 5 mics rating as opposed to the 5 mic rating The Source gives out now, maybe I'm limiting 'classic' status too much.

I'm not the biggest head by any means, hip hop isn't my background, but maybe it's more like Jeezy helped put the South back on the map? Outkast, Geto Boys/Scarface, Goodie Mob etc were the ones that put the South on the hip hop map in the first place for me.

Exactly, that's what I meant. That's still a huge impact, because since that they've never left. Fuck, even NY has faded while the South is going strong.

And as for the Source, I didn't know anyone cared about them after the Benzino/Eminem feud

Truth. I don't get how a dude like Big L was in the tournament and a guy like Pharoahe Monch wasn't. I prolly woulda had an aneurism if Lamont beat Ghostface, b.

On the topic of Pac, I think all his solo albums in life are classics in one way or another. 2Pacalypse Now and Strictly are the most underrated but both have so many great tracks like Violent, If My Homie Calls, I Don't Give a Fuck, Trapped, Brenda's Got a Baby, Rebel of the Underground, Holla if Ya Hear Me, Keep Ya Head Up, I Get Around, Last Wordz, Representin' 93 and Streetz R Deathrow. Then Me Against the World needs no discussion while All Eyez on Me gets far too much shit for allegedly having too much filler. I think the only filler and wack track is What'z Ya Phone #. And Killuminati 7 Day Theory is also full of memorable tracks despite how angry Pac is throughout the whole thing. I'm not even that huge of a Pac fan and find his stans pretty annoying but he doesn't get nearly enough credit by the 'heads'.

One filler track on All Eyez On Me genuinely leads me to believe our copies of the album aren't the same. I can't even remember the last time I could listen to it all the way through.

A great album, potentially a classic, but just too ambitious. Regardless of whether it was for contractual reasons or just because he wanted to get out everything he wrote in jail, the album falls short IMO. Disc 2 in particular is not anywhere near his best, as a whole.
