Yeah, it was great that Kendrick Lamar's album sold more than even I think it would. Props to him for going gold, (although I predict it possibly would go platinum in the next couple of months). Nicki has her widespread fanbase of course, but I think she will cross over to the dark side and cater to the pop enthusiasts. Only last rapper that I believe can legit go platinum is Eminem (even Wayne/Drake, IIRC), and what I've been hearing from him lately is pretty half-baked compared to his older work.
How much did Nicki first album sell though? Because to me, that was a much better album and that was pretty close to hitting that pop-rap album perfection that she seems to be going after. It didn' hit it, but it was kinda close. This last album wasn't close.
Her music will never really appeal to me, but as a black female(2 strikes against her from jump from certain masses) I will ride for her as long as she do what she do with some integrity. Before she was doing so, this last album, not so much. I'll give her a pass for now though because she's getting over big time. I KNOW she knows her hip hop though, so now that she's really got them Becky's in her corner she better bring it and make them understand and if they don't get it, fuck 'em. I got no problem expanding fanbases, just don't go full on wack shit. Too much to ask?
I ain't asking for an MC Superunderground," I got skills" album from her. She can go pop-rap, just make it GOOD, and don't forget the RAP part of it..
Eminem's cooked, IMO. Though part of that might be wishful thinking, I don't like him, he's gotten an outsized amount of credit for years, and I hope he just goes away. On Facebook not too long ago somebody I knew back in the day liked some page like "It's not rap without Eminem". I defriended his corny ass, fuck outta here with that.
