Big L was a talented rapper, but both his albums were 3.5/5 at best. He gets so much retroactive love on the internet, it's crazy.

I didn't throw AMW on there cause I haven't heard it all. And I like War and Peace. I dig most of Cube's stuff.
And L is in there because he's the sickest punchline rapper of all time. If nothing else, you listen to him for two reasons: punchlines and intensity.

Hip-hop I recommend are: N.W.A, Ice Cube (old albums), De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Geto Boys, Redman (specially 90s albums), Scarface, Compton's Most Wanted and UGK. Most of it is gangsta rap but it's damn good.
From the 80s, I love most of it including LL Cool J, RUN DMC, The D.O.C., Eric B. & Rakim, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, Ice-T, Slick Rick, Beastie Boys and EPMD.
For some carefree stuff, I really enjoy early 2 Live Crew and Poison Clan, but they may not be for everyone, specially the former.

Wu-Tang Clan - I'm biased here so I tend to like anything they put out but you can't go wrong with 36 Chambers.
Method Man - Tical
And if you want a new artist to check out, check out A$AP Rocky. Has an album dropping soon and his LiveLoveA$AP mixtape was fire. He's disgusting. Check out his verse on Bath Salt from Flatbush Zombies.

Thanks for the recs again guys, got a lot of listening to do

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
I'm a big Wiz fan so I don't know where you got that from.
I'm knocking Gucci or Future because they can't rap like Big L or Nas, I knock them because their music is terrible. There's certain artists who's music I enjoy despite the fact that they aren't good lyricists, see Waka Flocka & 2 Chainz. They fill their purpose/role IMO, they're not lyrical rappers, they're more of guys who make club bangers and songs to get you hype.
Future & Gucci's music is terrible IMO.

Definitely check for AMW, if you like Cube and like Death Certificate, I'd say that's a good bet that you'd like it. The content is similar to DC, though the production is different(but also very good). Just recognize it was 1990, so it's going to sound like it.....but in Cube's case that's a good thing.
As for War and Peace.....everyone's got some albums that they like more than most others do, so I get that. Can't say I like much from those albums though, and everyone I knew back then wasn't really feeling those 2. I liked Ghetto Vet, Til We Rich, Hello, and maybe a couple more. Also like My Loved Ones....but I can't remember if that was on the War album, it came out as a single around that time though and was on the Player's Club SDTK.
Big L, I would agree is an MC that should be listened to, and was definitely one of the doper punchline rappers. I also think that he's more of the type of rapper that I would just stick to his best songs and even freestyles. He doesn't have "that" album that's so dope you have to go get it. Maybe he would've made that album eventually, but unfortunately we'll never know.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
Ay yo, you all should go place some nominations in the Greatest Rapper Ever Tournament thread I created in the music section.
Thought it would be something different for us to do.

Nah. I've gotta digest it more to accurately place it......but I've listened enough to know that it's not messing with Nas or Killer Mike's albums.
