Because people who don't know anything other than what the media force feeds them are ignorant to everything he was about. That's true with any rapper though.

Pac's latter career is what blew him up, he wasn't "known" like that until he went to Death Row and all the controversy.

In terms of "pop" hits, again Pac only had 2. Puffy had like 4-5 just on his first album the year after Pac died. So there's a big segment of people who know all about Pac but really don't know his music like THAT.

And I really don't give a shit about those people, because rap fans know all about Pac's music. But I'm just going with the Beatles comparision, where pretty much EVERYBODY knows at least a decent amount of music, or at least they will by the time they're in their 20's whether they like it or not.

Yes but rap was still a new genre. If you were famous, black, and rhyming words, the media would automatically say you're a thug.

A few thoughts.....1. Rap music sales(and really music sales) are SO down now, it's crazy. Anyone who is old enough to remember the 90's and early 2000's has to shake their heads after seeing this. nobody goes platinum now? Nobody goes gold? Only like 20 acts even top 100K? Wow. The SCRUB acts used to break 100k.

2. Kendrick....#2 album of the year. Big ups. Glad to see quality music selling, that doesn't happen alot. Many doubted his buzz was legit, but it was. I'm glad to see that quality music can still sell based on word of mouth. NOBODY would've predicted a year ago, that kendrick would outsell Ross, Kanye's compilation, etc.

3. On the other end of the spectrum, I gotta give Nicki props. Not for her album because it sucks, but the fact that she can have the # 1 rap (kind've) album even though it sucks! I remember when she was first getting a buzz with mixtapes and guest appearances, so there's no sarcasm in my props. I'm glad she's eating at this level because she did work her way up and she CAN rap. If she ever makes a good album, I'll cop. I'm interested to see what her next move is....she got that pop crowd on her side. Will she cater to them, or will she bring them into her world? Do the right thing, Nicki!

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread

I'm not really tripping on the album sales being low. The top 5 biggest rappers in the game didn't release any albums (Wayne, Drake, Kanye, Jay, Eminem).

Were people really expecting artists like Nicki, Kendrick & Ross to sell like Taylor Swift does?

I don't think sales are going down. There were four platinum albums in 2011, this was just a down year due to lack of big names releasing albums.

Good point on the biggest rappers being absent.

I did think that Nicki would be plat, Ross would be Gold, GOOD Music gold at least. Hell after Nas first week and the positive buzz, I figured he'd be gold by now.

Not much staying power in a lot of albums these days. And the game has just changed. Thinking back, I remember like Puffy's first album.....he was still putting videos(when they mattered and people watched them on TV, not youtube) and singles out like a whole year after the album came out. And the album was probably still selling. Same with other huge albums like 50 Cent, Nelly, etc.

You just don't see that now. Game's changed.

Good choice. His first three albums are absolute fire and so is the rest of his catalog for that matter. Also give Geto Boys a try. His group and they are also great.

Scarface is excellent. Him, Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel are one of my favorite combinations in hip-hop.

Also, 2Pac is definitely not as widely known/respected as The Beatles on a worldwide scale. Not even close. And this is from a guy that can't stand The Beatles.

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.

Can't forget about this one...damn Kanye used to be so nasty with the beats. I miss his soulful beats, I agree with what Ether said in here the other day, nowadays it just feels like Kanye overproduces the songs. Like he's trying to create some marvelous beat when he was better when he just kept it simple like he did when he first started.
