Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread

Eminem may not have talked about gangbanging but he sure did talk about killing his wife and mother.

And Common was irrelevant when College Dropout dropped. Common signing with Kanye and coming out with "Be" is what revived his career.

And Nas sure as hell wasn't the first NY rapper to make it big that wasn't talking about gangbanging. The GKMC comparisons to Illmatic are irrational IMO, and people need to just leave the two albums alone. They're both great debut albums and I think it should be left at that, now maybe if GKMC stands the test of time like Illmatic and 10-20 years from now people will still bumping it like it came out yesterday, then we can talk.

No, they came adter all those others established that lane. I mean they came out in 93, but they didn't have any impact until 95 after all those others got it started.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread

It was a typo, I meant to say artist but yeah my point still stands, Nas didn't single-handedly bring the East Coast back into the rap scene back in around '94. There was Nas, Biggie, Wu-Tang, it was more than just Nas.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread

When you guys say [insert album here] is the new Illmatic, do you mean best album of that artist's catalog? Up there with best album of all time? Most influential album of a certain time period/region/genre? Best debut? What?

There's too many avenues imo just to call something or compare it to Illmatic without explanation because without it, I don't think a person can give the right argument agreeing or disagreeing

Thing is, it's not even Kendrick's debut album.

And really, it's not even possible to have a debut like Nas did anymore, because all these guys release a bunch of mixtapes before their first album comes out.

It's just such a dumb discussion on every level. I'm blown away at how dependent the newer generation of rap fans are on the older shit, always trying to compare EVERY rapper and album to some old shit.

Just listen to your shit from your generation and enjoy it for what it is and create your own memories and classics and standards, gotdamn.
