Don't know if anybody has posted this prior, but anyone posting in this thread should watch Ice T's documentary Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap.

LOL. I really don't even know what that's supposed to mean....."the West Coast's Illmatic". I mean, it's not like the west coast never had classic albums on par with Illmatic before. Or classic debut albums even.

I really don't know why people keep comparing GKMC to Illmatic. I fail to see how they compare other they're both debut albums by guys with high potential. And its not like Illmatic is the only one.

Some say Illmatic brought the East Coast back into the rap scene but Nas didn't do it alone. Nas, Wu-Tang, Biggie and IIRC another rapper who's name I can't remember...all these guys debut albums came out around the same time. Kendrick hasn't made the West Coast a powerhouse in the rap game again. Sure he's brought a bit of relevancy there after years of irrelevancy, but that's it. He hasnt "revived" anything IMO.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread

Exactly.. The whole "west coast" thing makes no sense.. Hip Hop isn't even regional anymore.. There are such few dope artists out that people aren't even concerned where rappers are from or where they're repping.. The music doesn't even sound distinct, I mean does Kendrick really sound like a Cali rapper of old? Or does a guy like ASAP really sound like a NY rapper?

If anything, GKMC's legacy will be that it was able to pull numbers and get such a mainstream buzz in a time where people really aren't really interested in lyricists.

Another you can add to that list is J. Cole. Raps nothing like your typical southern rapper.

Would Mobb Deep fall into this?

That's different. Common & Em were already famous rappers who didn't talk about gangbanging from the Midwest.

Kendrick is probably one of the few if not the only West Coast artists in recent memory to actually achieve some mainstream success as a West Coast artist that doesn't talk about gangbanging.
