Influentally, it remains to be seen, but GKMC isn't exactly revitalizing the west coast the way Illmatic did for the east.

Illmatic didn't do that alone though.
Before it and around the same time there was people like Wu-Tang, Tribe, Black Moon, Jeru the Damaja, GangStarr, and Biggie dropping heaters.
And on a commercial level, it was BIG who "brought the east back". Illmatic didn't really sell shit back then. Those who knew, loved it and it had a good buzz, and it was like that "your favorite rapper's favorite".

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
OB4CL2 is such a great album, probably a top 5 rap album of the past 5 years at worst imo.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
OB4CL2 is a solid album like LB said, an 8/10. But it comes nowhere close to the original for me.
It also probably wouldn't be in my top 5 albums of the past five years, but it might be in top 10. Not really sure, have never made a top list of my favorite albums of the last five years.

LIG
The Ecstatic
GKMC
Probably Graduation even though Big Brother is a recycle bin track
4Eva N A Day if you want to count that
and that's really it, 9/10 album to me and the album has no skips imo. Still is in heavy rotation and will be until Rae drops another dope solo (probably never)

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
4Eva N A Day isn't even K.R.I.T.'s best mixtape though.
And if you're counting mixtapes, Friday Night Lights is the best release of the last 5 years for me.

I think it's fair to consider GKMC the Illmatic of this generation rather than the West Coast's Illmatic.

But how? Nothing changed.

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
It is to me, Return of 4Eva slightly behind it
And I could never really get into Cole, I've tried to listen to his projects and I enjoy them, then I have no urge to listen to them again and they're off my Ipod in a week. I know he's top 5 at worst right now (Kendrick, K.R.I.T, Nas, Pusha have arguments ahead of him0, but I can't get into him for some reason.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
I don't see how someone could listen to K.R.I.T. and not Cole. Their music style is so similar, they're both great lyrical rappers, they both have great production which they make themselves which features a lot of classic R&B sampling, their subject matter is pretty similar.
I know Cole & Kendrick are supposedly coming out with an album together but Cole & K.R.I.T. are the perfect fit together and I would much rather have those two drop an album than Cole & Kendrick.

I always assumed doing those kind of lists shocks you when you find out how old and not old some albums are

I thought Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang was just as good as OB4CL.
