True. I'll check it out.

Really, REALLY good read. I make this comparison a lot and it pisses me off that people write off GKMC or Kendrick when you make the comparison simply because Illmatic dropped first. It's all over the comment section. Illmatic isn't light years above every other rap album to ever exist. A lot of albums can contest it easily. 36 Chambers, Ready To Die, Death Certificate, OB4CL, Liquid Swords, etc. It makes me not even want to praise the album because people overrate the fuck out of it. It's not untouchable.

Or maybe they just don't think GKMC is very good, or Kendrick Lamar for that matter. I don't think Illmatic is the undisputed G.O.A.T. album, but I do think comparing GKMC to it from a quality standpoint is blasphemy. Influentally, it remains to be seen, but GKMC isn't exactly revitalizing the west coast the way Illmatic did for the east.

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.

I'm not saying that everyone who doesn't side with the comparison is like that, but there are people who just have very ignorant point of views and reasoning for them. Of course Illmatic is the better album, but they do have a a lot of similarities.

It's just too mellow for me. Even with the aggressiveness you speak of, the song puts me in a relaxed mood. It's that damn Phil Collins sample which I love as much!
And on the Raekwon "Ice Cream" song - Cappadonna might win the award for the worst simile ever with "I love you like I love my dick size".

This is a completely different era though.. There's no East/West beef now, there's no reason for there to be a revitalization of the West.. Imo, this album was more of a revitalization of the art of Hip Hop...
I think it's fair to consider GKMC the Illmatic of this generation rather than the West Coast's Illmatic.

It's not untouchable.....but it's undeniably great. Period.
The GKMC comparisions can't be made at this point. Illmatic has stood the test of time for 18 years......GKMC has been out for like 2 months.
I will say that it gave me that "feeling" that I got when I listened to a lot of the all time great albums back in the day.
I don't know why we need to even try to make these comparisions though. I say just enjoy it for what it is, and years down the road it very well may go down in history with the above named albums and some others. But we gotta let that happen.

It's a good album. I played it a lot at the time, but truthfully haven't really wanted to pull it out in awhile. Not nearly as good as OB4CL, but it's a good, solid, 8/10 type of album to me. Definitely a strong comeback for Rae, and gave him a big buzz after he was almost gone and forgotten for years.
