First – How does it feel to know that you are Kanye’s inspiration and second – Why do you think he didn’t mention your name??
Phonte: Well, I’ve known I was Kanye’s inspiration since back in 2003 when we did a few shows together. He told me that he read my verse from ‘The Yo-Yo’ in the Source and got scared that we were gonna beat him to the punch. …As for him not mentioning me by name, I thought it was kinda bitchmade because he personally knows who I am. If you’re gonna give me props, give me my props. Otherwise it just comes across as a backhanded compliment: ‘Yeah, I’m a big fan of what’s-that-guy’s-name…’ That’s some ho shit, in my opinion.
As for the props themselves, that’s cool and all…but if you’re really a fan and Little Brother’s music inspires you so much, why not reach out to us to make some more music together? Why would you not wanna make history with the younger cats in the game who helped to create a lane for you? But we all know the answer to that question…”
Phonte later shitted on 808's and called singing with autotune the whole album an "act of cowardice" for not actually using his own voice.
|
Ah ok..thx for the clarification...Phonte does have a point though
Phonte also said something about turning down Drake's offer to work with him on his album as well right?

Big L is the punchline king, but his lines look pretty poor when put up against the three you just mentioned, and some others. I probably wouldn't have L in my top 10.

Thats why there is a Hip Hop Discussion thread, for opinions across the world. I'd have L in my top 10. Along with three I mentioned.

I liked L, but damn with the retroactive love he gets on the internet. It's nuts.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
I do agree that Runaway was too long but Blame Game is only 8 minutes long because of the Chris Rock skit at the end, takeaway the Chris Rock skit and it's a 5 minute song. As far as the beats being overproduced, I didn't have a problem with them, that's just Kanye's style nowadays. From hearing MBDTF, Cruel Summer, Watch the Throne and G.O.O.D. Friday's, I've just come to accept that as Kanye's new style of beats.
I've replayed MBDTF multiple times. It's a dope album. I feel like you're nitpicking a little bit.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
The problem with having people like L and Pun in a top 10 to me is their lack of albums due to their untimely death. Biggie had two, but those are regarded as some of the best albums in hip hop history. Pun has two, but nobody ever talks about Yeah Baby. L only released one album when he was alive, and Lifestylez sounds dated to me to be honest. I can't put L and Pun above Nas, Jay, Scarface, Ghostface, etc when they released multiple classic solo albums and L and Pun only released one at best.

One thing that rubs me the wrong way with the Big L love is that most giving him this love have never even heard the great music out of the DITC crew....Show and AG, OC, Diamond D, etc. It's just "OMG Big L would've been so great, he would've had Jay-z spot because of that freestyle and Lifestylez is my favorite album, OMG! What the fuck is Stunts, Blunts, and Hip Hop?"
Kool Keith....he weird. I like Ultramagnetic MC's old school stuff, but that's where I checked out on him.
