There's a reason why albums like Illmatic, Ready to Die, MATW, etc are considered to be GOAT albums. They had a huge impact, reached a large audience, are still listened to today. Nobody is checking for Joe Budden outside of JBTV and a few hip hop forums, it's the sad truth. It's not just Budden, one of my favorite artists is Lloyd Banks. Nobody is checking for him either (although that's his own fault because he's extremely lazy).

Am I saying he's not dope? No, but MM2 better than any of the tapes I mentioned? Ehhhhhhhhhh.
This.

There's probably a whole bunch of guys on Youtube, who make good beats, are dope lyricists, but no one's ever going to consider them GOAT if they don't go out there and well get famous.

While I was never a fan of his music, Bow Wow is making a good point with these comments about the state of hip-hop/labels nowadays...

Quote:
I believe we’re in this trend phase, that’s what I was just telling my boys about that um, you know, we’re in this trendy rap era where you see a lot of, and it’s sad you know and I just put this on Facebook, you know, how these labels are setting artists up to fail…They’re jumping on these guys’ records that may have 2 million hits on YouTube. But that doesn't mean 2 million hits on YouTube is gonna allow you to stay in this game for 5, 6 years. See, I’m looking for guys like, real artists, you know. It’s time for labels to start signing real artists, artists that are gonna be here for 5 years, 6,7, 8 years. Not artists that are gonna be here over the course of the summer. Not artists that are gonna be here over 6 months or artists that are gonna be here over the summer. And that’s what we’re seeing, constantly. Every time you see a new rapper get signed, the pattern never fails. They put out one good club record and then next thing you know, they’re gone. And it’s like fast quick money for these major labels and the artist is what, happy off of making $10,000, $5,000 by going into the club? That’s not a career. We need more guys like Kanye in the game, we need to sign more “Kendrick Lamars”, more real artists that can really lead Hip-Hop into the direction that it should go.”

As A&R’s, as major labels, they really have to go to these towns and find talent. You don’t hear anything about showcases anymore, you don’t hear about talent shows anymore. And that’s what we need to see. We gotta get back to getting raw talent. And then you won’t have to hear about people saying Hip-Hop is dead or Hip-Hop is just a trendy form of music now. Or you gotta make up a dance in order to, you know what I’m saying. It’s just time to get back to the talent. Anybody can write a four word hook and repeat a million times. There’s no artistry in that. We need artists. We need songwriters in the game. And that’s really all I gotta say about that really. To me, it’s boring.

He makes a good point but sounds hypocritical since he's signed to YMCMB.

V6 is one of the best mixtapes this year (not nearly as good as CC2 though) imo. Banks is so slept on, what a shame.

aight, my top 10 hip hop albums of 2012. Yeah, I know we still got December but whatever. If something dope comes out in the next month(new Freeway coming?) I'll update it.

The purpose of this.....to see what everyone was feeling. I'm sure a few of these albums a lot of us will list, but there will be some that you see that you've either not heard or barely gave a listen to and may go back to and see if you were missing anything. I know there are a few albums out there that I haven't heard and am interested.....and there may be some that flew under my radar and I missed and need to go check. So with that said, here's mine at this point......

1. Nas - Life is Good
2. Kendrick Lamar - GKMC
3. Big K.R.I.T - 4 Eva N a Day
4. Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
5. Curren$y - Stoned Immaculate
6. Skyzoo - A Dream Deferred
7. Sean Price - Mic Tyson
8. Big K.R.I.T - Live From the Underground
9. Lupe Fiasco - The Great American Rap Album
10. Large Professor - Professor @ Large
