Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
Greetings fellas, first post in this thread, quick question -
so the goat album thread got me digging out a load of old favourites but also made me realize that Im pretty much clueless to most happenings in hiphop for the last say, 5 - 7 years. Still listened to a good bit in that time but mostly kept it to the old reliable 90s classics or else was digging back further into 80s stuff (slick rick, big daddy kane).
Just looking for some recomendations on what would be considered essential albums of the last 5 years or so, only ones Id know would be big unavoidable ones like Wayne, Jay z, Kanye (did enjoy Watch the Throne alot), looking for ones Ive missed.
Open to any suggestions, stuff with interesting production is a plus with me.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
I'll just start from the mid 2000s, alot of these aren't "essentials" and are hit or miss for some, but these are some of my favorite hip hop albums ever
Diplomatic Immunity- The Diplomats
Purple Haze- Cam'ron
The Stimulus Package- Freeway & Jake One
The B.Coming- Beanie Sigel
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx....Pt ii- Raekwon
The Fix- Scarface
Let's Get It: Thugs Motivation 101- Young Jeezy
Be- Common
Quality- Talib Kweli
Food & Liquor- Lupe Fiasco
Hell Hath No Fury- The Clipse
Death is Certain- Royce Da 5'9
American Gangster- Jay-Z
College Dropout, & Late Registration- Kanye West
The Black Album- Jay-Z
Life is Good- Nas
Elzhi- Elmatic
good kid, m.A.A.d City- Kendrick Lamar
The Greatest Story Never Told- Saigon
Bold= Highly Recommended, I would bold Diplomatic Immunity & Purple Haze but that's really hit or miss for people

Not sure what kinda stuff you like/don't like, but I'll list some albums I really dug since 2007.
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
Blu - Below the Heavens
Brother Ali - The Undisputed Truth
Joell Ortiz - The Brick
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool
Shad - The Old Prince
Talib Kweli - Eardrum
Pharoahe Monch - Desire
Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, Paint That Shit Gold
Charles Hamilton - The Pink Lavalamp
Elzhi - The Preface
Raekwon - OB4CL II
Joe Budden - Padded Room
Saigon - Greatest Story Never Told
Big K.R.I.T. - Return of 4eva
Rick Ross - Deeper than Rap (Lyrics are weak, but the production is beyond epic)
Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Nas - Life Is Good
Phonte - Charity Starts At Home
A lot of people like Section.80 and Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City by Kendrick Lamar, but I'm not a fan of him at all so...
Yeah, I'll stop there, this list is getting long lol

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
Thanks guys, Il check out a few from the artists I know and a few randoms and see what I think.
Top of the list will be the Clipse album you both mentioned, I was a big fan of Lord Willin, actually dug that out after seeing someone mention it in the goat album nominations.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
do people actually prefer section.80 over GKMC? I've seen a lot of people choose section.80 as their preference.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
I'd take the three best songs from Section.80 over the three best songs from GKMC but overall GKMC is the better album.

nope, it's not even close to me. Section 80 is good, and has some great songs but it's got some misses too and just isn't the total package as an album that GKMC is.

Re: Hip Hop Discussion Thread
The thing that ruins Section.80 is the filler tracks. But like I said before, I'd take the top 3 or 5 best songs from Section.80 over the top 3-5 from GKMC. But overall GKMC is better, I can listen to GKMC from start to finish enjoying every song, not the same feel with Section.80.
Like, If I was rating the top 5 songs from both albums, 3 would be from Section.80.
1. A.D.H.D.
2. Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe
3. Rigamortis
4. Keisha's Song
5. Money Trees
But you expand it to 10 or 15 or more and it starts to become more lopsided in favor of GKMC. Just a better overall album.
On another note, I hate to be that guy...but all the new Kendrick bandwagon fans are annoying. I'm happy his fanbase has expanded but the people who just started listening to Kendrick after his album got all the hype that try to make it seem like they're a hip-hop head because they downloaded GKMC from Mediafire are so fucking annoying, and I'm sure most of you know the type of fan I'm describing.
