I think the problem with Load and Reload is that they could have made one pretty good album out of those songs, but the filler far outweighs the decent songs on it. There's absolutely no quality control on it, which is bad news when you're completely changing your style to a more 'mainstream' direction, and your core fanbase is mostly metal fans, not the most open-minded bunch at the best of times. To get away with an alt-rock album, they had to make it fucking good, not two that balance at around average at best. Some good songs, but not certainly not 27 worth releasing.
As for St Anger, it's pretty bollocks. Horribly produced, repetitive music, some of Hetfield's most cringeworthy lyrics, repetitive vocals, the complete absence of guitar solos when you have a band member who's only job is soloing, it's WAY too long, all the riffs seem to be below the 5th fret on the lowest string, and for a band who usually had a fair amount of variety in their albums, it just sounds like one idea dragged out for well over an hour. It's a turd of an album, and it doesn't even sound like the same band that recorded Lightning or Puppets, let alone being comparable in quality.
My unpopular opinion - I really, really like screamo.
