I've never had any visceral disdain towards the group. Only never found the appeal to be massive for myself. When it came to growing up Nirvana never clicked for me. Even outside of my general childhood pop phases - Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, BOY BANDS - the style of music I was geared towards was a bunch of the 80's "hair" metal types & The Offspring. Offspring of which will always remain as my favorite band. Could be safe to say Offspring to me is what Nirvana was/is to yourself.

In terms of song structure and accessibility, Nevermind is their best record. Always found it hilarious when people claimed that Nirvana sold out with that album, especially when on the song "In Bloom" they basically tell the mainstream crop of fans to F off during the chorus. To me that track is key to understanding Kurt's mindset at the time, it's very misunderstood and incredibly ironic that it became one of their biggest hits. Hell, even the video is alluding to the underlying theme:

To me, the message of this track lead to In Utero, a much more personal record where Kurt was completely bare boned. It absolutely exemplified the true essence of Punk/Grunge rebelion, culminating in Kurt off'ing himself. This record was made at a time when he was battling with his relationship problems and the weight of fame, and the record was made to alienate the fans that didn't understand his music. For those reasons, this record stands out more. There's some fantastic stand alone tracks on it too.

Man, I was HUGE into Offspring at one point. Probably listened to Smash at least 50 times when it came out.

Good post blarg. Totally agree about In Bloom and the more 'personal feel' of In Utero. In Utero is probably one of my top 5 favourite albums of all time in fact.

All these Nirvana hipsters you see in their nirvana T-Shirts and posting soppy bullshit on Youtube on all their videos wind me up so much.

They still don't get IT even after his death.

Still worth being huge into, imo. Latest album is classic Offspring without coming off as a tired, similar take.

Smash is great. Ixnay on the Hombre is where they knocked it out of the park. Not just b/c it holds Gone Away on it. Entire album is brilliant.

All the fan bases are of this kind. Is not so strange, specially when the group believe in "anti-mainstream" bullshit.

I tell you this after knowing David Lynch and Tool worshipers. Man i love lynch but a big part of his fans are seriously assholes

Ixnay on the Hombre was indeed a good follow up, but by then I sorta moved on to other bands so I didn't listen to it as much as Smash. I remember loving "the Meaning of Life", and finding "Intermission" incredibly random lol

Got back into them later on with Americana since my girlfriend at the time did her best at selling me how good it was. Aside from the singles, I thought it was solid at the time for what it was meant to be. "Staring at the Sun" and "Americana" were my favs.

So many nostalgic memories you guys are evoking in this thread *tear*

A lot of great artists have stupid hipster fanbases. Bob Marley, The Beatles (who for the record I don't really like), Wu-Tang Clan, etc.

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.
