Looking at that video reminds me of how good BET use to be. He performed that song for the grown & sexy in attendance. A song like that wouldn't have much of a chance on today's BET.
That motherfucking voice! Owned that microphone. Having been inspired, I know what my next haircut is going to look like.

And with BET, let's not even go there!

This right here is better than anything they got going on for themselves

I agree you can probably forget about Ashanti and Ciara.

"Come Over" and "One In A Million" (still love that album) are not only beautiful songs but beautiful stories. Missy, Timbaland & Magoo, Ginuwine and Aaliyah was a good look.

This is my shit:

Disagree. Beyonce was the lead singer (and the face) of a group that damn near sold 10 million off one album. To think she couldn't have done even half of that solo is nuts. Aaliyah's death did not facilitate Beyonce's success in any way/shape/form. It was gonna happen anyway.

Aaliyah was doin' her thing before she died, no doubt about that; but Beyonce was already a big deal at that point. It isn't like Aaliyah was about to record all the songs Beyonce did, and then Beyonce got 'em passed down to her.

She was always that singer that got lost in the shuffle in comparison to the better and more successful female singers such as Whitney, Toni, Mariah, Mary J, Brandy, Monica, Faith, Mya, etc.

Jay and Beyonce's reaction whenever they watch an episode of Impact! Wrestling.

Avoid. And speaking of avoidance, why are the names "Ashanti" and "Ciara" floating around in this thread?

Trust me, I know how good and successful she is (she's my favorite performer of this generation). I was just saying she would have had stiffer competition at the top with Aaliyah on the rise also and doing movies.

She was getting outshined. The only female r&b artists selling more that summer were Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson & Mary J Blige.

I agree with you that Beyonce would have eventually risen to the top but with Aaliyah still in the picture along with the other artists that would be more space taken, and I don't think Aaliyah would have faded like Ashanti or Ciara has now. Aayilah was still on the rise and it's just sad to think about where her career would have gone because she had the potential and certainly the talent imo to be big with the right opportunity. I always wonder what would her next step be if she had done The Matrix movie, what would that have led to?

Btw, this conversation is so funny to me because I have never even slightly taken opposition to Beyonce before.

Heard the Beyonce/Aaliyah argument more than once tbh and frankly I've always sided with Clique's argument. While Beyonce's fame didn't come straght from Aaliyah's death for sure I do believe it did help her to an extent. Aaliyah in the early 2000's especially was just growing stronger and stronger. Would have challenged Beyonce for sure I'd say. Beyonce still probably would have been bigger than her but would have been much tougher for sure.

Maxwell's amazing, no doubt. His last album was supposed to be the start of a trilogy, can't wait for the next one to drop. What did you think about Embrya? It's the "black sheep" out of his albums, but it's one of my faves. The slower, more ambient style works so well with his voice.

The IWC has a bad reputation. Are you a part of the problem, or the answer?

Embrya was definitely a good album. It's overshadowed because it was stuck between Urban Hang Suite and Now.

I agree that his voice is suited for a slower type style. Especially the neo-soul sound. Sometimes I think these artists do up-tempo songs for the mainstream; which isn't a bad idea. It can be damaging to those who shouldn't be doing that though.

A gem from Embrya:
