Re: i$e's Magical Music Megapost

Because with all the great that Gorguts was, they are playing in the same vein of bands like Atheist, Neurosis, Cynic or Voivod and the rest of the bands that begin to experiment with jazz and other influences outside the rock/metal spectrum.

If you ask me. They have great albums but nothing that define a genere or claim to be the peak for something like a "essencial" should do.

With the exception of Voivod who I have not listened to, Gorguts sound like none of those bands whatsoever. They play a very abrasive experimental style of death metal. Those are some extremely loose connections as they all play different styles. Gorguts is known for very chaotic and dissonant riffs and song arrangements with an avant-garde nature, something none of the bands that ive listened to have in common with Gorguts. I do not know Voivod at all but all the bands you mentioned share very little other than loose connections with Gorguts. Neurosis especially have nothing in common with Gorguts. They are sludge/post metal who also draw from dark amibent, hardcore, doom metal and industrial. Gorguts are not influenced by any of those genres. And Gorguts are not nearly as influenced by Jazz as you think, you need to listen to them closer.

Cynic and Atheist it should be quite obvious do sound a lot different from Gorguts. They are much more influenced in Jazz music and progressive music than Gorguts. Gorguts only share a very loose connection with those genres. Their focus as I said before is very technical, abrasive and chaotic dissonant metal which before them had not been done in the way they wrote. They influence a tonne of death metal bands such as Ulcerate, Gigan and Barring Teeth. They took technical death metal to the next level with a style that had not been thought of before. Their song arrangements are a whole new level of complexity whilst maintaining fluid songwriting.

So yes, they do deserve to be heralded as Classic and your rather loose connections to the bands u named doesn't change my mind.

I don't say they play similarly, i say the play in the same vein of introducing another elements. The "Avant-garde" elements you claim are simply jazz improvisation, specially bacause labels like "Avant-Garde" doesn't mean nothing outside of jazz or "classic" (another idiotic label) elements.

Also, i suposse you're talking about the material outside the 3 first albums. Because the three first are standard Death metal with technical elements, something that was being do it since the born of death metal.

Again, i wasn't talking bad about the albums at all, and i don't want to change your mind or opinion (that will be a stupid goal), the only thing i'm saying is that are other classics (asuming you can call Gorguts a Classic) i will put in the OP list before any Gorguts.

nah, good discussion plenty of DM essentials covered and while I'm not the biggest DM head let me throw a recent one in the mix that didnt get enough attention on release

Blood Revolt -Indoctrine (2010)

Side project of singer of Primordial and members of Revenge, its a concept album charting one mans descent through idealism/religous extremism into full on terrorism/martyrdom, it just nails the subject, you're right inside his head, I believe it was influenced by the McVeigh story but it applies to any case post 9/11 and listening to it now its hard not to think of Anders Breivik, rather uncomfortable stuff but the music just utterly rips so much that its totally compelling to get absorbed in (isnt that DM in a nutshell).
If you know Revenge youll know what to expect, insane drum fills and riffs all over the place, the vocals take a little getting used to, not typical dm vocals at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKEQefCPER8
this is the final track and climax of the album, probably the most straight forward thing on it.
