Definitely, an enjoyable listen. Catchy as hell.

Just ordered the Converge/Dropdead split 7", and the two track deafheaven 7" that you couldn't buy, it was only given away with orders from Deathwish at random. Both of them for less than a third of the price that the split goes for occasionally on ebay, alone. I love having friends with labels sometimes.

FIRST 2012 UPDATE!

Sorry for the FUCKING delay. Was tied up on family business and the festive period threw me off. Going to post a big one right now and we'll get this cocksucking thread back on track.

Leviathain is the best, agreed.

I have thought about doing soundtracks & scores, yeah. Probably in the next update.

Good choices.

The Who - Tommy and some others I can think off. I might do some game scores too. Shenmue & some of the Zelda themes spring to mind.

Old Kerry McGee was cool. An acoustic guitar player/singer from Gothenburg, it was a good opening act. Like his voice a lot, plus he had a record player set up and played Johnny Cash vinyl while tuning. That was cool.

Aficionado were next. Really cool band, their s/t LP is great. Catchy sing-a-long indie-punk songs. I think a lot of people could be into them, male and female vocals with flutes in there, they're good. Lyrically a brilliant band too.

We Were Skeletons were great. Really good screamo three piece, sounded amazing live, their LP is well worth checking out if you're into that genre, too. On a different night they would have been the best band playing, no doubt. Unfortunately for them...

... End Of A Year/Self Defence Music may be the best band around right now. I could rave about them forever, and I'm almost tempted to. Their 'You Are Beneath Me' album is amazing, and they've followed it up with a new single in I'm Going Through Some Shit, maybe the best song they've ever done. If you're not listening to this band you're missing something special. They're comparable to Revolution Summer-era bands but have completely evolved recently and are just incredible.

The Saddest Landscape were amazing, too, but nothing really could have followed the previous set. They played songs off a variety of records (with my current personal favourite, The Sound Of The Spectacle being well represented, along with You Will Not Survive). Just so good live, as you'd expect now. Turn out for them was poor but it was late and public transport here sucks, which was a shame.

Got a copy of TSL's new album After The Lights which they had pressed especially for the European tour, 150 copies or. It sold so well on the mainland leg that they had to limit it to 5 sold per show which sucked, but at least I managed to get one of them. Beautiful looking vinyl, and a great record on first listen. It's out officially in a month, I'd recommend picking it up.

Links:

The Saddest Landscape - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94EBkbt48Uc

End Of A Year/Self Defence Family - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_0ln5xTRIs (incredible song)

We Were Skeletons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu1maLV9aJk

Aficionado - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jWaCA6qdeo I know there's a lot of people into more interesting indie stuff, evidenced by the Jezabels love. This is definitely worth you trying out.
Sweet post. I'll be honest, I'm not really loving the new Saddest Landscape. I mean it's good, for sure, but I think they'll always fall into the 'good' category. I liked You Will Not Survive, and don't think they'll ever top it, but even that didn't blow me away.

We Were Skeletons & Aficianado have both been spun and they're both great. Going to spin them a few more times before I deliver a proper review.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I DON'T LIKE CONVERGE AT ALL. That felt good.

I hadn't, but those links are impressive. Any LP's/EP's I should be aware of?

NEW INDUCTEES

(I'm going to add the whole of my 2011 top 25 into the master list, so these are all fresh).

These recs are mostly recent. I'll add some classics in next time for sure. Just want to use this one to mop up the best of last year and the start of this one.

Week 4
21/1/2011
----------------

1. The Maccabees - Given to the Wild

Genre : Indie / Alt
Year : 2012

Oh my God, I'm in love with this album. I'll be VERY surprised if this isn't in my top 10 by the end of 2012 (and that's a strong statement given how much good shit is due out this year), and I think I might even like this more than The Jazabels' LP from last year. Indie perfection; soaring guitar work, beautiful melodies, ethereal vocals and it possesses that rare ability to take you into another world whilst you're listening (like how Isis' Oceanic does). I don't care if you don't like indie or you didn't like these guys before, you need to hear this with good headphones. My favourite release of the year so far and a great example of how a band can mature from good to great in a short timespan. AMAZING.

2. Barrow - Being Without

Genre : Post-Hardcore/Screamo
Year : 2011

This one would have made my top ten of 2011 if it didn't come out the week after I did the fucking list. HOWEVER, it does not elude the MASTER list. Stunning mix of post-hardcore/screamo with the best harsh/clean vocal combo since Amia Venera Landscape's LP in 2010. I wrote a review of this album on my blog (in my sig) if you're interested in hearing any more. Think La Dispute mixed with some Thrice, mixed with some Iselia, mixed with loads of other screamo/emo stuff. Greatness.

3. Dela - Translation Lost

Genre : Hip-Hop
Year : 2011

Another one I didn't hear till the end of December, but this is the best hip-hop album of last year. Smart without being pretentious (hi CunninLynguists), it has some really lovely beats that allow this album to straddle the line between the new wave of smart hip-hop and traditional hip-hop. A relaxing, concise album that I was glad to hear after I previously criticised last year for being a terrible one for the genre (which it still was).

4. Departures - When Losing Everything is All you Ever Wanted

Genre : Hardcore
Year : 2011

I think I might have really paid fuck all attention to this one last year, but that was a mistake in hindsight. A glorious hardcore release that packs an emotional punch but never looses its roots. Departures finally stepped out from being 'good' and become 'almost great' with this one. Check it out if you haven't.

5. FareWell Poetry - Hoping for the Invisible to Ignite

Genre : Post-Rock
Year : 2011

FUCK YOU 2011. AGAIN, I didn't hear this till after I made my rankings (nobody let me do one till January next year). The absolute best best-rock album of last year; an amazing mix between Godspeed You! Black Emporer, Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. Has awesome female spoken vocals that meander and slowly build up (simular to Ancients). If you're into post-rock, then you need to hear this quickly.

6. Loma Prieta - IV

Genre : Emo
Year : 2012

Hooray for awesome emo albums! This is a brutal (yet strangely uplifting) album that reminds me of Envy. These guys have been slowly improving over the years and they've finally got the balance right this time. Amazing vocals and instrumentation, and if you can get over the slightly muddy production, a real gem.

7. The Weeknd - Echoes of Silence

Genre : Urban / R'n'B
Year : 2011 (LOL)

Ah, the difficult third chapter. Oh, he nailed it? You're fucking right. The best r'n'b album I've heard in maybe a decade, with a glorious mix of amazing vocal work, honest lyrics (you can tell he means what he says, and that's slightly depressing) and soothing, infectious beats. I urge everyone who might turn away this genre to check it out. 'Outside' was in my top 10 tracks of the entire year.

8. Pinback - Summer in Abaddon

Genre : Indie
Year : 2004

One of the best Indie albums ever, with some of the tightest musicianship I've heard in a while and excellent songwriting. I totally forgot about this album when I wrote up this list but I'd say it's pretty seminal, paving the way for some of the decades more recent Indie giants. Great guitar work, especially bass. CHECK.

That's all for now!

Thanks. When you think about it, there have been amazing soundtracks. Also Tommy

Oh, are there any albums of 2012 that are worth checking out so far? (this question goes out to everyone ) I've listened to Loma Prieta (delicious stuff) and the new Maccabees as we speak.

oh god, Maccabees's new album. I was zoned out in front of MTV and Pelican came on, and I was like ugh, what a shitty song.

Then I woke up the next morning and hummed something and I was like, what is that? Then I remembered, looked it up. By the time the song finished it was on my iTunes and I spammed it nonstop for a good few days. Literally ten times in a row at one point. If the rest of the songs are just as good, I'm picking it up.

They are.

EDIT: Actually, Pelican is the weakest track on here, yet it's still good. The rest of the album is FAR more melancholy and less poppy.

Awesome post there i$e. To avoid confusing myself with multi-quoting I'll put it into points;

1. Yeah TSL are a good band, not a great band, but I do think they have some great songs. I'm now convinced none of them are on the new album. I like it but I don't love it, ya know? It's near the top of my 2012 list but it won't be next month, let alone at the end of the year. Great live band though.

2. WWS's album is cool. Aficionado, I liked a lot too, even if they drink the scummiest cider I've ever seen (3 litres should break the 2 mark, IMO). Catchy as hell. End Of A Year/Self Defence Family rule a lot too, check them out if you haven't.

3. Good additions. The Barrow LP is great, IV is possibly my favourite Loma Prieta yet and I'm still raving about Departures to everyone I see. Their 2nd full length could be stunning if they continue on this path.

4. Converge rule really hard, but you have good taste otherwise, so fair enough.

Yeah? I was excited 'cause Kingdom are cool, hadn't really heard too much WA but I'm looking forward to seeing them now. Just glad we have two gigs before it, because I don't think we'll have had more than 6 practises total by the gig. It could be interesting..

S/t tapes by Todos Caeran and Mahria turned up in the post on Friday. Took over 6 weeks to come from Canada but it was worth it, both these bands are fantastic. Mahria's has sold out the first pressing now I think so they're obviously getting the recognition they deserve.

i$e you may be happy to hear that I'm warming to La Dispute now. Listened to them a few times in the last two weeks and I'm enjoying them a lot more.

Sweet. I'm seeing them live on Feb 1st. HYPE. They're apparently incredible live.

Check out their Untitled 7" actually. I think you'll really enjoy that.

I got my batch of merch tee's that I ordered last week too. Here's pictures of what I got.

1. And So I Watch You From Afar
2. Dangers
3. La Dispute
4. Streetlight Manifesto
5. The Dear Hunter

The Dangers one looks amazing when ironed.

Oh, and WRITE THAT REVIEW BITCH. Hah.
