D'oh, I have signatures turned off so didn't see it! I'll give it a listen now.

Yeah, Bastions are a great band. Playing in my local venue this month, but I'm away at the time so gonna miss it. Got a Crocus (HYPE!)/Hospitals/Monolith show to go to tomorrow, and all the bands usually kill it live. Next day is a local doom band/a not local hardcore band/a grindcore band, so that'll be a decent show. I think I'm at the stage where 9 times out of 10, the smaller bands put on the best gigs, I can't remember the last time I paid more than 3 for entry. Would have loved to go to that Bastions show though.

Listened through a couple of songs while I was typing this and you guys sound awesome. I'll definitely bookmark this for later listening (football's on now).

Nice list. If you're interested, I wrote a few articles in a similar vein, although I worked with 5 albums per article. Genres I've touched on include: hip hop, doom metal, post rock, dark ambient and neofolk/martial industrial among others. Definitely check it out if you're looking for some interesting but obscure music.

Just got back from the Crocus gig. Seriously, if you like pg.99/Orchid/whatever, based on that set, you NEED to hear their LP (think it's getting released February? although one of them was saying the bass sounded like shit in the mix, but whatever). I get on with most of them but don't get on with one member of the band at all, and based on that I was kinda hoping they'd started sucking, but... wow. What a set.

Also check out Hospitals, they put on a great show, and their tape which has been sold out forever is still on sale at shows, so that was a pleasant surprise. They're on mediafire anyway.

Someone I know of runs this blog. Figured I'd post it here so others can browse it. Plus it's got some Hospitals stuff

Hospitals are sick. What's your beef with one of the members? Is he a dickhead or something? Anyways..

Week 3 Inductees
6/11/2011
----------------

1. Yndi Halda - Enjoy Eternal Bliss

Genre : Post-Rock
Year : 2006

This is one of those albums that I intended to listen to way before I did. I listened to a TON of post-rock around the time this came out and I just couldn't bring myself to listen to another album. Big mistake. An epic, sprawling album of soundscapes and emotional highs that matches GB!YE at their best. Acquire.

2. Pianos Become The Teeth - The Lack Long After

Genre : Hardcore
Year : 2011

Continuing this years amazing run of new music is PBTT. It kind of reminds me of travels by Defeater; a melodic hardcore album with one of the best vocal performances I've heard in a long, long time. If you're into emotional stuff, try this.

3. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Genre : Rock / Blues / Progressive / EVERYTHING
Year : 1977

I'm so sorry for not including this in my original essentials list. How embarrassing. One of the best records ever. Highly influential.

4. In Pieces - Lions Write History

Genre : Post-Hardcore
Year : 2005

Underrated album that not many seem to have heard of. Legit song-writing ability along the lines of bands like Thrice & Thursday. Great vocal range and some tight as fuck drumming.

5. Radical Face - Ghost

Genre : Folk / Indie
Year : 2007

Man, this is such a sick album. Guy might have the best vocal range in the world (although it's certainly really good), but he's an absolute monster of a songwriter. 'Welcome Home, Son' might be my favourite folk track of the last five years.

6. Purplene - Purplene

Genre : Indie
Year : 2004

An album nobody seems to have heard yet I consider it to be a downbeat indie masterpiece. Supremely emotional songwriting along the lines of Antlers. It would be great if some of you checked this out cos' I could talk about it all day.

Just wanted to let know that the lack of Gojira is disturbing.

More important shit to get on the list first.

The Way of All Flesh is a good album though.

To be honest a good friend of mine had issues with him back in college, he said shit was still going on but having spoken to him since the gig it'd seem that's not the case. I get to loyal when friends have beef and it may be misguided in this case. I haven't spoken to the guy, so who knows. The new singer is a guy I went to school & worked with and he's cool, so whatever. I'm looking forward to the Crocus album, it's coming out next year on Holy Roar. Gonna be worth checking out based on that set, it was just sick. So much better than last time I saw them.

Yeah, the Hospitals tape is amazing. And just noticed it says mine is 21/30 so I guess snap one up before they're gone. Wish it was on 7" though.

Just in case anyone's remotely interested, here's a demo my old band recorded a few years back. We practised sporadically for 18 months or so, had a couple of recording sessions, played one gig with Bangers/Calvinball/Sssnakes and then split when our singer moved away. Reviews compared us to What Price, Wonderland?, The Vidablue, Hoover, Facel Vega, early Rye Coalition, Rites Of Spring, Revolution Summer-era DC bands, mid-90s emo but I dunno, the main songwriters were more into noise rock and Pixies/Smashing Pumpkins/Therapy?/anything on AmRep. It'd be a pretty shameless plug if you could buy it or see us anywhere, but I'd just like people to hear it.

http://www.mediafire.com/?3yj5y2jhdjj

Feedback's always appreciated, even if it's just 'you suck and your singer doesn't make sense'. We did have a pretty gnarly review where they guy called us Marmite and gave us 2.5/5 because he didn't know if he understood it or not, but that was on punktastic, so you know.

I rate you a 2.5.

I'll check it out and see what's up. Being compared to Rites of Spring is pretty gnarly.

Get those new recs I made if you haven't heard of any. That Puplene album, man. Shitttt.

I forget to rec my fucking AOTY which was sloppy. Next time, I guess.
