10/10 I love My Chemical Romance, and this was the first song of theirs I ever heard or saw the video for. Incredible.
I was heartbroken when I heard they broke up. I really liked their music.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. For those of you not familiar with Larry Norman, to put it simply he is the Christian Rock equivalent of Elvis Presley or John Lennon. At a time when most churches only played hymns, and rock 'n' roll was considered the "Devil's music", he went against the mainstream. Early in his career he was at odds with many churches and mainstream Gospel publications for his stances. He is quoted as remarking, "I love God and I follow Jesus but I just don't have much affinity for the organized folderol of the churches in the Western World".
Despite the age of this song, and the social issues it takes on, many of the points made in it are as valid and useful today as they were over 40 years ago. As with many of his songs, the focus for Believers goes from introspection, to full blown "what have you done for them lately"? And for the non-believers, the question becomes "whom do you really serve"?
That's what I really like about Larry Norman. It doesn't matter what you believe. The songs he wrote made you think.
