Re: Official Rock Discussion Thread
Mister Hands, you should quit while you're ahead.
This whole "let's hate the bands that actually get airplay and mainstream coverage, while my favourite bands aren't given a fuck about" attitude is beyond pathetic, and you're just a carbon copy of every other numpty who acted the same before you. Big deal, Nickelback are popular, big deal Creed are. Good on them, they found a formula that works.

Where did I say the fact they're popular is the reason I don't like them? The numerous Kings of Leon, Lily Allen and John Mayer albums in my collection should put paid to that notion. What I'm looking for in the rock music I spend time on is a spark of creativity, or a great voice, or some outstanding musicianship. The bands I'm picking on have none of that and less, and that's why I pick on them. They make bad music - objectively bad music.
Which isn't to say you can't enjoy them - everyone has guilty pleasures. But the reason they're picked on so much isn't because they're popular. It's because they're terrible.

Outstanding musicianship?
Have you not heard Mark Tremonti and Scott Phillips play their instruments? Tremonti's one of the better modern rock guitarists today so bite your tongue before you start questioning how talented these people really are.
Also, even people that hate Evanescence can tell you that while the band itself may not be the most creative thing on the planet, she has pipes and she is a very controlled and powerful singer.

That's why I said Alter Bridge are decent - because in Alter Bridge they actually got to display their talent.

He does some pretty good solos in Creed as well but Creed's too "objectively bad" for you to hear it, I suppose.

That's one fantastic song by Creed, and they have some other good ones, as do Nickelback to an extent.

As apposed to Sleater Kinney. Damn, I just heard a couple of their songs on YouTube. They are pathetic. You're just pissed at successful bands as they know how to tune their guitars, unlike this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOM107PIxV8

The big difference between me and most here, I'd wager, is that, while I do love a good guitar solo, it's not really what I judge musicianship on. I'd easily rate Marc Ribot over Malmsteen, for instance. But I won't lie - a lot of what puts me off Creed is Scott Stapp's voice (not to mention the fact that Tremonti and Phillips are on record as saying he's prevented them from writing more interesting songs). I'd say even if you like Creed you could understand people hating Stapp.

The day that's considered original and creative is the day every genuinely talented singer on this earth commits ritual suicide. Diluted AiC mixed with Core-era STP does not an innovative blend make.

Oh don't get me wrong. I'd take a Mayer solo over a Malmsteen solo any day. I don't rate Tremonti's solos on how blisterlingly fast he can play it, I rate it on how well it goes in terms of the actual song. Which for the most part in Creed, were very tasteful which is why I understand he holds back on Creed and not on Alter Bridge. And as a Creed fan, I understand why people hate them, I hate Stapp too, I just think it's unfair that people bring down the whole band just because Stapp isn't as talented as the rest of his bandmates.
