Re: Official Rock Discussion Thread
See, but you've grouped extremely different bands into several labels there. Post Grunge is mainly bands like Puddle of Mudd and Bush who are generally well liked by grunge and mainstream fans. Hard Rock is most accurately bands like Disturbed and Godsmack, which lack some of the technicality of metal (and are often admittedly not metal. David Draiman of Disturbed has stated numerous times they don't claim to be metal) but have a lot of the same hardness, and are also fairly accepted. Even Nu-Metal, which is generally looked down upon with bands like Korn, is separate from Rap-Metal. Rap-Metal is Limp Bizkit, HU, etc. It's looked down upon because it generally lacks the lyrical creativity or talent of rap music while also lacking the real quality of music present in metal. The abundance of pubescent fans doesn't help their case.
Metal fans are protective of their label because it gets tossed around a lot erroneously. People don't like their musical tastes associated with what they, and most people, perceive as shitty music. Beyond their personal tastes, it boils down to their perception. When people ask me what I listen to and I say metal and then they start on about how they do to and then list a bunch of mediocre radio heavy screamo bands, it's extremely frustrating to know that to an ignorant bystander, we like the same music. Genre names are there for a reason.
So don't take any personal offense, you're welcome to like whatever you want, everyone listens to something that is looked down on by someone. Just understand that it's pretty normal for people, especially musicians and musically inclined people like the ones that run metal magazines, to not want themselves associated with what they considered God-awful tripe.
