It's amazing how somebody can actually think like this. So only a select few people can actually like a band? Fuck off! If they're good then more people are going to listen to them. Doesn't really matter if the band changes their style slightly I'm still going to listen to them because they make good music.

Agreed with this. I like it when some magazines give away CD compilations with about 15 tracks from different bands, some of them can get me into new bands that I've never heard of. Same with Spotify, it can be a great way to introduce you bands similar to your tastes. I've found quite a few bands that I like just through the 'Related Artists' tab.

A Kerrang cd sampler introduced me to Finch. Though it's lost to time, I'll forever cherish that cd even if it's for one song. I thank the Kerrang, Metal Hammmer, Alternative Press and Metal Edge magazine for my taste in music. I had friends who would *cough*burn cds*cough* for me and we got our internet connection, fucking forget about it.
A relative my age gave me an extra copy of New Found Glory's self-titled album and told me about Slipknot. My mother went out the same day (at Walmart no less ) about bought me their first album. I'm happy to have those two as the godfathers of my musical taste---agression (slipknot) and melody (NFG).
And by the way, I knew of Bullet for My Valentine when they released their "Hand of Blood" mini cd before they hit it big here in the states.
Edit: Is Spotify a recent thing?

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
Yeah, Spotify is quite a recent thing. But it was annoying to get it. Think you had to put your name on a waiting list, or have someone recommend it to you, then wait before you got permission to download it. But it's basically just a place where you can listen to albums, songs etc. all the time. You have to listen to adverts every 3/4 songs, though, but that's not a bad thing. If you subscribe to them you remove the adverts but can also download the songs.
And Metal Hammer is where I mainly get my CD compilations from. Really enjoy the Subterranea feature in the back.

Eh, I'll pass.
Those MH comps are looooong gone. A Hondo Maclean song sticks out. I'm fond of the Incoming and review sections myself, along with some interviews. Don't really like the Subterranean feature since I'm not a big fan of extreme metal, though I do still read them.
Edit: It was interesting to hear from Cannibal Corpse that Jim Carrey was a fan of theirs.

Spotify is usually a place I'll listen to an album to see if I should buy the album of not. I may hear a good song somewhere and decide to go listen to the album. Sometimes though they don't really have bands that I want to hear, some Extreme bands that is who aren't well known yet, or don't agree to put their records on there.
Metal Hammer still do those compilation CDs, unless they stop them overseas...?

I look up the track listing and head to Youtube to see if I should buy the album. Some independent labels are awesome and they'll put the whole album up and you can pick the tracks you want to listen to. That's how I ended up with some recent cds.
I wouldn't know about that. My mother's co-worker (where I would get them) would hand magazines to her along with some samplers.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
Rocksound CDs used to be quality. That's how I first heard Mclusky, and Mclusky were fucking awesome, so there's that. I believe it's also how I got into Isis, and thus post metal in general in a big way. But my memory of 10+ years ago is a bit hazy.
Don't know how it is these days, mind.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
It's gone downhill if Asking Alexandria are on the cover.
