Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
Half way through the new Nightwish album, Imaginarium, and I'm about as giddy as one fan could be. The vocals on this albums are done in a very interesting fashion. I can't explain it, but I'm loving it. Sticking with their original style and throwing something new in the mix at the same time. Bravo.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
I was listening to it myself yesterday. What on earth happened to music with that kind of ambition mixed with such musical diversity.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
Give me some recent examples please. I'm not saying it ended with that album. Just saying there's a dearth of modern music where artists really push the limits of their music and sound creatively.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
I can think of plenty of bands who are creative with their music. At least I feel that way about them.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
My megapost has hundreds of examples. Modern music is in tremendous shape if you switch off your radio and look a little deeper.

Re: Official Rock/Metal Discussion Thread
I was talking about the sprawling double album type of record more than anything. Like a White Album or Sign O' the Times. I never said it was dead but it's rare to see an artist pull it off convincingly.

The Dear Hunter - Color Spectrum (Complete Collection)
It's also always been rare. I can think of only a handful of great double albums in history and I don't see it as an indicator of creativity levels in modern music.

Check out Blood Fire Death, Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods and the Nordland albums for Viking Metal. These were great influences on the whole folk/viking genre populated by Ensiferum, Fintroll and the like.
The self-titled album, Under the Sign of the Black Mark and The Return are proto-black metal, which influenced more popular bands like Emperor, Limbonic Art and even Immortal (in my opinion, atleast) to some extent.
Requiem and Octagon were albums judged as bad by critics, but I feel different. They are good if you are going on a long drive and just wish to listen to aggressive, incoherent and violent thrash on the way!

The mention of Wintersun in this thread made me moist with pleasure. I fucking love Wintersun. Their new album is called Time and it was due to come out next year but is now TBA.
Fuck, man, they've been working on it since 2006 and have gone through some shit that keeps setting it back. Such bad luck and I really hope it doesn't suck shit after waiting all this time.
