So revered tongue twister MC "Busdriver" released an album earlier this year that completely slipped under the radar, at least to me. On his latest LP "Beaus$Eros" Busdriver all but completely ditches his lightning fast lyrical onslaught in favor of singing in an effort to reinvent himself. While the change is refreshing, his new style wavers from interesting to borderline annoying. At times, it seems like he's channeling Bloc Party's Kele Okereke which ends up being both a blessing and a curse. The one true high point on this thing is Loden's production throughout. Loden is one of the electronic music scene's best kept secrets, and on Beaus$Eros he expends his repetoire by attempting a more accessible, slightly less abstract but nevertheless varied sound which further suggests that Loden may be a force to be reckoned with in years to come, both in the electronic and pop scene.
Hard one to recommend, if you're a longtime fan of Busdriver, you may have a really hard time ajusting to the new style. If you're looking for a well produced and eccentric pop/electronic record then check it out. It's good, but flawed. Could've been great had it been a more focused effort, and had Busdriver brought his A-game on all the tracks.
