Then.

Urge Overkill are one of a limited number of really great bands to come out of the 90s alternative pop/rock scene. Drug induced musical exploration while never venturing too far outside of the box. These guys displayed some real chops while creating radio friendly jams with dark drug-culture inspired lyrical content. It's a crying shame that they'll be forever remembered for a Neil Diamond cover only because it was featured in a Tarantino film.

Motley Crue - Dr. Feelgood and Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil.

I've been breaking out a lot of old CD's that I haven't listened to in awhile. After I am finished with the Crue, I am moving onto Black Flag and then Rollins Band.

The opening track in this, The Whip Hand gets a mixed reaction from everybody, ranging from "omg nin wannabe" to "the drums sound horrible". I think people are missing the point though. Comparing this to nin would be like comparing an apple to a raisin and the drums give the music an appropriate "dry" feel. Plus the playing is just fucking awesome. It gives the illusion that the song's in an odd time signature, but it's not. And nevermind that this is TMV's most accessible opening to date because the overall feel and those driving, uncomfortable riffs help to ensure that some Bush fan from Ohio isn't going to "get it".

Beyond the Bridge - The Old Man and the Spirit
Leprous - Aeolia

Been on a progressive kick after devouring OSI's latest album. Norway seems to be home to some of the most creative prog metal. You've got: Atrox, Anti-Depressive Delivery, Ihsahn, Arcturus (they have elements of prog), Ark and now Leprous. Not to mention their amazing black metal scene. Must be something in the water there..

Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God.

Earthquake warning here, so I am relaxing at home, getting bored and listening to this.

One of the most famous underground bands. Blut Aus Nord take the traditional black metal sound, distort it with weird chord changes, 'spiralling' guitar effects, droning, ambient and even industrial elements. Song names are highly intriguing. What are they really? Avante garde? Progressive? This sound is undefinable, and yet it is unmistakeably a magnificient warping of traditional black metal.

This work transforms Black Metal. Heck, this work transforms music. I feel like I am walking down a set of spiralling stairs from dizzying heights into the realms of transcendental ecstasy blah, blah...

Well, here's what the band has to say about their music (Source: wiki:

"Blut Aus Nord is an artistic concept. We don’t need to belong to a specific category of people to exist. If black metal is just this subversive feeling and not a basic musical style, then Blut Aus Nord is a black metal act. But if we have to be compared to all these childish satanic clowns, please let us work outwards [from] this pathetic circus. This form of art deserves something else than these mediocre bands and their old music composed 10 years before by someone else."

Heh, I like some of those 'satanic clown bands' myself, but Blut Aus Nord really do tower over all these black metal bands.
