If not, you are simply assuming that's what happened. And that really does nothing for me or for your argument. Maybe they started writing better songs and people started noticing it.
And for arguments sake, let's say they did... *and I don't really buy that* but let's just say they did. What's wrong with that? Music is their living and if they change their style so they can actually make a living playing music then what's wrong with it? Would you rather them make CD's that no one will buy and have to flip burgers at McDonalds to pay the bills? I wouldn't.

That's absolutely fine. I have no problem with that at all. I don't like them as much as I used to either. I just hate the whole, "sold out" argument. It's so cliche now. I'm absolutely thrilled that a band I like alot is successful and can make a living doing something they love. What's wrong with that? That's wonderful as far as I'm concerned. More power to them.

Re: Rock & Metal Discussion Thread.
It just bugs me cause im such a metalhead that when a band gets soft & everything i feel like they dont care about the music anymore & just wanna be more well known, thats just how i feel though.

No they don't. I have seen no evidence of that what so ever. Please provide some if you wish to bring that to the table.
Hypothetical situations really do nothing for me because you can't back that up with anything tangible in the slightest. And so what if non metal fans think that Metallica are the best. That in itself tells you something without even looking to deep into it. If there were metals bands, "greater" than Metallica don't you think non metal fans would know about them? Of course they would.
No one says one band is their favorite band without looking into them. Please. Don't even try that. And even if those fans were to look into it they would realize that Metallica are the greatest metal band of all time. Just because they don't look into it doesn't mean it isn't so.
You are absolutely entitled to your opinion...doesn't mean it makes any sense in the slightest. Your opinion is nonsense because you can't back it up with anything other than hypothetical situations. Your opinion is nothing but an opinion when you don't want to look into the facts and logic of the argument. Again, would you like to look at the tangible FACTS of the case or would you still like to ignore them? You say they are overrated but bring not a single fact or even logic into the argument. That speaks tons of your opinion. It really does.
|
"And even if those fans were to look into it they would realize that Metallica are the greatest metal band of all time"- that sounds pretty one sided to me, but whatever. I'm sorry but it is gonna be really hard to bring in other peoples opinions and try to make it FACT. I have no idea how you can prove something overrated with a fact, when it really applies to peoples opinions. Tangible facts, show Metallica is good, ok thats not my point I never said they weren't good, you can be good and still be overrated. Anything good is bound to be considered overrated, it goes hand in hand most of the time. And the part where you said no one says their favorite band is Metallica, you must have misread. I am talking about people when asked saying their favorite band is Metallica, because of the success of their major hits (such as Enter Sandman). You see, a lot less say Megadeth or whatever for two reasons. 1. Mainstream airplay (radio stations, tv stations etc.) used to (and sometimes still do) play Metallica over the likes of Megadeth. I for one grew up listening to radio stations (here is my first fact, 92.3 KROCK significantly played Metallica repeatedly, I didn't even hear of Megadeth until I looked into it in my later years). Therefore, people assume Metallica are the best. And assuming something is adding to inevidence, which ultimately leads to overration (I don't know if thats even a word!).
And saying an opinion is nonsense? Than that makes everyones nonsense. Opinions do not need to be based on facts, just because I can't prove it with a bar graph or a "This is why Metallica is overrated chart" doesn't mean other people don't agree. Don't tell me that a guy wearing a Metallica shirt is the "ultimate fan". For all I know, he probably likes one song of theirs and decided to wear the shirt of it, I've seen people like that before, its not only me it is common sometimes.
Lady Croft, I respect you as a poster and understand you like Metallica. But because I claim Metallica is overrated but can't prove it in facts, does not mean I am the only one who believes so. I really don't know why you are so determined to shoot down an opinion I stated, that i was willing to back up to the best of my ability.
P.S.- I am sorry if some of my writing above is unreadable, I am typing in the dark.

It just goes to show you how the term, "overrated" is bullshit when you can't back it up with anything other than opinion. It's just lame and means nothing really.
And people don't "assume" Metallica are better. They are and it's backed up by facts such as album sales and concert sales. Megadeth *who I happen to like more than Metallica* were playing theaters while Metallica were selling out arena's. I saw Megadeth in a tiny theater and absolutely loved it.

No it doesn't. Some people can actually back up their opinions with facts and logic. Those who can't really have no arguement.

Opinions don't need to be based on facts but those that are carry more weight. What part of that don't you understand?

First, stop assuming what I like. I'm not a Metallica fan at all, but I'm not stupid enough, or ignorant enough to claim they are overrated when all evidence points to the fact that they are not. It's a great concept called being objective... something fanboys know nothing about. Metallica deserve everything they get and all the praise they get. Just ask their peers.

When I started liking Metallica they weren't even played on the radio, only on specialty shows if you were lucky.
We used to have a show here on an independant radio station every Sunday night and I'd sit there with my little stereo and my blanks cassettes and record the entire show then listen back to the stuff and keep the stuff I liked. Then I'd go out and buy what I liked. I got into many bands that way.
I'm still a big fan of the 80's hair/glam metal. Speaking of which, I'll be buying my Whitesnake tickets tommorrow. They are touring here at the end of March and have a new album coming out soon. Last week I went to Iron Maiden and next month I have Ozzy Osbourne.

Is Zombie still opening up for Ozzy for the show you're going to? I'm already jealous enough, so just put the last few nails in the coffin of my admiration if you don't mind.

Re: Rock & Metal Discussion Thread.
I doubt Rob Zombie would come to Australia just to open for Ozzy. We'll no doubt get some local hack opening.
That being said I loved the band who opened for Iron Maiden - Vanishing Point. I got tehir album the next day and have listened to it heaps.

Re: Rock & Metal Discussion Thread.
As far as the Megadeth-Metallica argument, im siding with Megadeth in this one. Infact, im going to a Megadeth show here in milwaukee May 7th (at the Eagles Ballroom, For those of you who know milwaukee.) The reason im going with Deth on this one is, lately, i can only stand to listen to selective metallica songs before getting bored. As with Megadeth, i can listen to "Rust in Peace" or "Youthanasia" over and over again and never get bored with it. But thats just me.

Re: Rock & Metal Discussion Thread.
Avenged Sevenfold (album) took me off guard because it wasn't very heavy (well, as heavy as I expected it to be), but after a few listens it was fine, now it's one of my favs. 'Afterlife' is incredible.
