MTV when it was actually MTV .... the memories, the thoughts, the shows, the discussion!!

Ok, I thought this could be a great and hopefully pretty active thread here in regards to MTV when MTV was actually music television as opposed to whatever it is you want to call it now, it's just not been the same for as long as I can remember!!

I remember coming home from school and would watch either MTV or Nickelodeon, although it was known as MTV Europe for us here in the UK which would often play hits ages before they even came out in the UK due to them already being released and big in Europe such as Scatman and Macarena for example.

They also had really great shows too such as Most Wanted with Ray Cokes which was awesome. Dial MTV I forgot about until seeing the recent ident on Youtube but that was great too. Select MTV and the Hit List UK they would show, MTV News, artists performances with live European links, it was just great all the time and something I do actually miss.

Some of these idents here I remember, how many of these can you recall? I'm sure there will be some where you'll be like 'Oh man I remember that one' which you totally forgot about.

8:34 with the ball I remember out of these first and the screaming face etc... these must have been from the mid - late 90's or something, all those around there really I can remember and they were ace!

Dial MTV is the one I forgot but remembered soon as I saw it on Youtube just now.

And Music Non Stop too.

This show was awesome!!! I used to watch this all the time, even though they were on late at night and I was up for school in the morning, I still loved it haha

Hit List UK with Lisa I'Anson (EYC at 1:54 is pretty damn cool!!)

Not sure when this intro is from as I don't overly remember the intro to this when I would watch it, but Yo! MTV Raps also.

MTV News was always great!! They would have exclusives like this on bands all the time.

Shows like Startrax where they would let the artists completely take over the show and introduce the tracks such as Luniz, Bobby Brown, Tevin Campbell and all that kinda stuff.

Kickstart MTV was another good one that would often be on.

Bytesize was also great, they would have little intro's with the artists too before playing their tracks.

MTV Amore where they would play all those love tracks late at night.

They would also do shows like this which would live link throughout all of Europe at the same time, as you can see in this video where it showcases various crowds. Bands would perform in Europe and would be shown on screens in the countries where they weren't there with the footage from wherever they were performing from, as you can see in this video here which is great!

Select MTV also where it was pretty much like a jukebox where you'd call up and choose a track from the playlist.

And of course we had AWESOME shows such as Beavis & Butthead for example also, which were so good on MTV late at night!!

Hoenstly, I could go on, they had so many great VJ's too on the shows that would present throughout that this is what made MTV so great in the 90's and into the 00's I believe, but these were great. So what are your MTV memories when MTV used to actually be .... MTV.

I thought this could make a really great thread if people get involved with this one

Don't worry Heff, we can still have a nice Thanksgiving. I bought us a nice big vegetarian turkey. It'll be delicious!

For me, these were the shows that I especially loved from vintage MTV. Growing up in Toronto (we didn't get our own Canadian version of MTV until the early 2000s), I only ever got to watch MTV when I would visit family in Upstate NY or Florida. Oh, the memories!

Headbanger's Ball

Yo! MTV Raps

Club MTV

House of Style

MTV Unplugged

MTV Unplugged!!! That's another I used to watch too. I think I may have seen that Pearl Jam one but I remember watching the Nirvana one a lot. Man Who Sold The World used to be played quite often and it was great!!

Marky Mark too, before he was an actor ha

Ah I don't think we got that here in the UK but I have seen this quite often, I used to have some video's sent over from the US and they would often have TRL footage on there like with 5ive and B*Witched etc.. UK bands that had gone over there basically. This was the one live from New York right?

Re: MTV when it was actually MTV .... the memories, the thoughts, the shows, the discussion!!

Living in Canada I wish I could have seen MTV in its heyday. It seems so much cooler to me than Canadas Muchmusic. A big problem for Muchmusic was CRTC rules dictated that they had to play thirty-three percent Canadian Content. There really wasn't a lot of good Canadian music in the 1990s. And it meant that only two in every three videos could be from the rest of the world. That really limited it.

It had shows but nothing like MTVs. There was a metal show, a rap show, an alternative/indie show, a countdown. And they had VJ's and band interviews. It got Ren & Stimpy in 1993/1994 but angry parents actually got it pulled, citing it not having anything related to "music" thus it should not be aired on Muchmusic. Beavis & Butthead came on in around 1996 and that was cool. But as a whole Muchmisoc was just a pale-comparison to and a poor-mans MTV.

One thing I will give it though is I've heard MTV moved a lot more into shows and away from music videos in the mid-1990s. Muchmusic was largely video based until the early-2000s. And I still watched the fuck out of it in my teenage years. From 1992-2004 every time I turned the TV on I instinctively dialed "29" (which was the channel Muchmusic was (and maybe even still is) here).

I can't remember why they weren't allowed to or never call it "MTV". I know an "MTV Canada" launched in the early 2000's but lawsuits with Muchmusics parent company prevented it from playing music videos. I don't think it lasted a year. It was mostly talk shows and some of the then-current MTV shows.

[EDIT] Joke's on me, MTV Canada is still up and running.

We had two MTV Canada's up here. One that started in the early 2000s, that did air some musical content. Not as much as Much Music, but enough for it to get in trouble with the CRTC for being competitive with Much Music. And then we got another one in 2005 without music content and that one is surprisingly still on the air today. It mainly has all of MTV's reality shows and some 90s like Student Bodies, Degrassi, Breaker High, etc.
