Underrated bands & artists?

Ok, I thought this could be quite good to give credit to some underrated bands and artists that don't really get the credit they deserve, and I thought I'd start with this band.

I'm not sure how many people are even aware of these guys, however I came across these by accident way back due to finding a mash up between Soul Decision and 5ive called 'If Ya Gettin' Faded' and thought these guys sounded great and wanted to know who they were, they're not known in the UK as I don't think they've had any release here, 'Faded' was scheduled to be released but was pulled at the last minute for whatever reason, however they were pretty good.

They have a kind of 80's/90's sound to them, which I guess some people like and the lead singer sounds a lot like George Michael in certain places, I think they were pretty big in Canada for a short period of time but other than that, I don't really know much about them, though I do know the lead singer Trevor Guthrie has done a few solo projects since and has featured on some dance tracks I think, however check out some of these here.

This was their most popular song, has quite an RnB vibe around it.

52 seconds he sounds quite George Michael in this.

Quite a cool little track.

Another catchy tune they did.

And this track here, sounds very 80's, which isn't really my preference as much, but he does really sound like George Michael again on this track, specially at the 0:35 seconds part.

The megamix with 5ive, it goes into a dance mix of Faded as well as the original version later in this mix, which is worth looking out for, 1:42 they come in and then again at 2:59 with the dance mix.

They were pretty good, I know the 80's/90's sound might not be preference to some, where as others love it, but that aside, they were a talented band capable of making some good tracks, from what I've heard too they've got back together too, so we may hear some new, more modern material from them also at some point, however enjoy.

And share some music from artists/bands you feel are underrated really, I actually forgot about these guys until recently.

Don't worry Heff, we can still have a nice Thanksgiving. I bought us a nice big vegetarian turkey. It'll be delicious!

Ride.

Late 80s/early 90s British band that were signed to Alan McGee's Creation Records, and who were part of the rise of 'Shoegazing' at the time. Andy Bell (formerly of Oasis/Beady Eye - although this is obviously before those stints) is in the band as guitarist and vocalist. They reformed there in 2014 and are hoping for a new release in 2017 this year. Worth checking out if you're into the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Oasis, etc.

I've not heard of these but I can completely see why people would feel they were underrated. I don't mind a bit of Oasis although not my preferred genre and I prefer their earlier stuff, I actually don't mind them now and again and these sound pretty good.

That said, I do like a bit of Ian Brown too and also Nirvana so my music taste is quite widespread, even if not my preferred genre.

But like all music though, I feel that it's so subjective that it's great how so many different vibes are out there for people to appeal to which is something I respect. Nothing worse than when you hear people with musical bigotry saying how their genre is superior like it's some sort of fact or something, it's just of preference which is a huge difference.

Anyway, without derailing the thread here, these sound pretty good!!

As above, not heard of these either but I can completely see why people would feel they were underrated. The fact I haven't heard of these or not so much me but more people in general just completely shows that they are criminally underrated.

Great stuff!!

Re: Underrated bands & artists?

Yeah this is my sort of topic. Gonna add a few here.

The Replacements

The most influential band nobody's ever heard of (though you've undoubtedly heard them if you watch movies.)

Paradise Lost

Goth/Doom/Industrial band (depending on the era), I like their "One Second" era best where things went softer and more eerie in tone.

Stabbing Westward

When everyone else was going nuts over NIN I much preferred the lesser known Stabbing Westward

Less Than Jake

My favourite of the Ska/Punk revival, seemed to get overlooked a lot of the time in favour of the bigger bands and those who broke out into mainstream pop rock like Blink and Green Day

Save Ferris

Another criminally underrated Ska band

Binary Star

It's criminal that more people don't know this hiphop duo, incredible lyricism and flow

Last Emperor

An emcee who never blew up like he should. This song actually features Too Poetic a few months before he died of cancer, which he raps about in this verse.

I have literally hundreds more but I'll leave it there for now.

Just had a listen to all these now ... some great stuff!! Less Than Jake I've been hearing the name quite a bit recently, not really heard them before but I have for some reason heard their name around, may have been on here in a few posts but it's great that they're getting recognition from people. Binary Star kinda rings a bell but the others I've not heard of.

I was trying to think who Save Ferris remind me of also, I say that as a good thing but someone was coming to mind for me but I can't think who, not B52's but something along those kind of lines.

For some reason I've also been reminded of these, even though they are completely different lol

Feel free to share more, sometimes bands and artists don't get the credit they deserve ... so lets give them some here

Less Than Jake actually arguably achieved more success in the UK than their native states where they were a big "college radio" hit band. Save Ferris may even remind you of themselves if you've ever seen "10 Things I Hate About You" they're the band who play the high school prom . I remember Alicia's Attic actually a lot of people in my school really liked them. I'm a huge music nerd (well, I'm a huge nerd but music is my mastermind subject lol) so I've spent years digging up all the random bands in various sub-genres. I'll add some more later on, about to have me tea soon and gotta go shop and get some eggs (can't have Gammon without eggs, I'm sure you understand being a fellow Brit haha.)

Re: Underrated bands & artists?

Thought I'd add a few more to try and keep the thread going

Steelheart

(Fun fact the singer from this band did Mark Wahlberg's vocals in "Rock Star" and they covered this song and made it more metal in the movie)

Jon Gomm

Incredible acoustic guitarist, this dude should be so much bigger than he is

Jonny Lang

I don't know how big he actually made it in the US but here in the UK he's pretty much an unknown, but such an amazing talent

The singer in that first band you know reminds me of Bono in parts, I say that as a complimentary thing by the way. Dude sounds great!!

And that Jon Gomm video is absolutely amazing!!! I like that track a lot and that performance is something else!!! I've just watched that video three times ... for real haha.

Speaking of 'Ain't Nobody', Matt Goss is an incredibly underrated singer and artist, in the UK specially however in the US he's been regularly selling out Vegas each week with his own residency. People such as Mariah, Celine, Nicole Scherzinger and so many huge established names had been going to see his show quite regularly, some actually asking to duet within his set but the dude is phenomenal.

He often did a live version here also of 'Ain't Nobody' also, the video isn't the best quality but it gives you an idea how good he was live when he performed this track. The bass player in the background of this performance came over to the UK to go on tour with him to perform, he's the actual bass player from Chaka Khan's original version, a guy called Melvin Davis.

2:26, he's naturally talented and gifted, the way he controls that note he makes it look so easy.

And 3:15 on here also.

And this track is just lovely. The video for this is where The Beatles recorded most of their hits, you may recognise it

The guy can sing. I've said so many times this album here is truly underrated, he's done a few really great albums.

Yep, I've not heard of Jonny Lang either, he sounds great. His voice sounds like a real established rock vocalist that's been in the game for years. What I mean is that he has a very mature and advanced voice too with a real nice sound to it, it sounds really strong!!

Really great stuff, appreciate you linking that as I genuinely enjoyed it!!
