Also if you like Ambient, Trance, Vocal Trance, House, Progressive House, Chill, Trip Hop, Psychedelic Trance feel free to post your favorites.
The classic era of trance really bloomed in 90s, but goes all the way back to beginning in Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project, and evolved into the "classic" era usually used for 90s, Trip Hop classic era began in 90s as well with groups such as Enigma, Massive Attack, Portishead, Jens Gad who produced Enigma side project Achillea, the 2000s saw rise of the vocal trance and early house group such as Gouryella, many have heard of DJ Tiesto but he was original member of Gouryella.
Orbital - Halcyon on and on
One of the most famous trance tracks that even if you don't know trance most everyone has heard bits and pieces of this track, used in Hackers movie main theme, the old cheesy Mortal Kombat movie, briefly in Matrix, many b-movie cyberpunk genre movies.
(The title is a respelling of the drug name Halcion, they changed spelling to avoid any legal issue. http://www.drugs.com/cdi/halcion.html. The drug is in the "benzo" family of Xanax, Tranxene, Valium but is known to be one of the strongest ones in the Benzodiazepine family, was highly abused in the late 80s and early to mid 90s until doctors rarely prescribe it now opting for safer yet still fairy strong Xanax being today's most popular and extremely simple to get from a doc "benzo", after Quaaludes stopped being manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, Halcion became the alternative go to drug & easy to get from doc drug for similar type effects - Article on the old Quaaludes no longer manufactured https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methaqualone)
Thus explains the sound, feel , trance genre, and title of Orbital's hit Halcyon on and on.
Enjoy the visuals in 720p full screen, the beautiful imagery of our planet and our few pristine locations on earth fit beautifully with the track. This is the full uncut 9 min track. It will build to drums but has a great build up.

Post your favorite trance, chill, house, trip hop, or even your favorite EDM although the 4 specific genres are my favorite, I do enjoy who I consider one the "Kings" of it all, none other than Aphex Twin. Personally the 2 genres I don't like is Gabba or Gabber (its just noise to me :-P ) and not really in to Dubstep, if its not overdone and the lighter "dubstep has been called " chillstep" some is pretty good.
I'll post my favorites as well, for fans of the genre and for folks looking for that perfect "workout" mix, you'll definitely find something here to enjoy.
Portishead - Glorybox Live at Rosemont - with orchestra
"Portishead was one of the leaders of " Trip Hop" genre splinter, it mixed Trance with elements of hip hop like turntablism, mixing in live sampling with a live band. But Glory Box is so damn hot and sultry. Beth Gibbons is pure sex, ignoring political correctness, smoking in the famous Rosemont and this song was way ahead of its time written in 90s. The lyrics are about she's fed up with other girls that play games with men. In lyrics she tells the man ignore these girls and warns "don't stop being a man" and how she just wants to be a woman. Beth pours her soul into the song live on stage, the late 90s atmosphere, along with orchestra and Beth's attitude makes this my favorite "Trip Hop" genre track.
Last video for this post, my personal opinion one of the kings of classic trance
With their debut single in
Enigma - Sadeness part 1
(Note: the spelling of title Sadeness many believe they misspelled it. Nope its a play on words, Ever hear the libertine author who wrote 120 days in Sodom, and many others, the word Sadism is based directly on his name, Marquis de Sade. So the title wordplay is both "sadness" and "Sadeness" of Sadism.
Those are some before I hit bed. Everyone posted great stuff!
I'm not a huge techno fan, but I grew up in 80s, and 90s grunge , even went to 1994 Woodstock. But I love grunge and 80s. But every since 9 years ago when I turned 30. I've fallen head over heels for trance, ambient, vocal trance , house, progressive house, chill.
I'm placing this here as its a little mix of the genre but its been called "NeoFolk", " Experimental" with classic trance and ambient mixtures by Woodkid.
Please excuse this long post, but by them self the full meaning of the album doesn't come through. Woodkid had said you can skip the other videos and let them stand on their own and just use the 11 minute short film and album intro Golden Age tells the main story just all at once.
You may have never heard of "Woodkid", but he's video director and song writer to the " corporate pop stars"
His background, Yoann Lemoine (born 16 March 1983) is a French director, graphic designer and songwriter. His most notable works include his music video direction for Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream", Taylor Swift's single "Back to December", Lana Del Rey's "Born to Die" and Mystery Jets' "Dreaming of Another World".
He took a break from the crap " corporate pop" machine and made his own album which hold messages, deeper meanings, and music videos that link in sequence. Just as a cool mention, this proves he's definitely more talented than bring used to make Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, etc stars. He created his own album and directed the videos, had help on a couple but is his vision lyrically and visually. You will notice his English he stresses syllables a bit odd, but its mainly his accent which he didn't want to sing in a faux American accent to further separate himself from "canned pop" churned out by corporations.
To understand the artistic sequential music videos his album intro is the "Primer" to unlock the meaning. This set of videos is really an experience, and a short film unfinished in music videos but the primer explains most.
Woodkid - The Golden Age
this is an 11 minute key to his entire album. The nostalgia of looking back. You will see tiny objects scattered throughout this initial intro that will appear in his other videos, this lets you in on what's going on in the fantasy world of the following videos.
It begins with almost the a 3d cat scan or MRI of what could be the imagined dead self but the scan reveals the nostalgia of youth inside him. (It's only last track of album that is about imagining his death and contemplating after he dies, creates 1 album of nostalgia to present to imagining his future)
This is reality of nostalgia, memories of a golden age, a young child, the poor family that doesn't see themselves as poor, cohesive family, teen love, arguments, making up after an argument, everyone playing, and respect of the elder.
While watching this, remember its shot in weird sequences because this is "Woodkid" sitting and remembering fond memories through a filter of nostalgia which nostalgia can erase the bad as you yearn for the past. While each age group is seen together in same scenes, but it represents innocent youth, young love, adulthood, and elderly in beautifully shot scenes cut to resemble memories.
Now the following is nostalgia through lens of fantasy. Woodkid was raised in a strict Catholic household. The 2 keys are a symbol of Catholicism and the Pope.
In depth explanation of the symbol of the 2 keys
The symbols of papal authority, which are the tiara (or triregnum) and the keys of St. Peter or supreme keys, "to bind and to unloose", one in gold and the other in silver, crossed and bound with a red cord, are located directly behind the Pontiff’s personal coat of arms.
The symbolism is drawn from the Gospel and is represented by the keys given to the Apostle Peter by Christ.
Since the XIV Century, the two crossed keys have been the official insignia of the Holy See. The gold one, on the right, alludes to the power in the kingdom of the heavens, the silver one, on the left, indicates the spiritual authority of the papacy on earth. The mechanisms are turned up towards the heaven and the grips turned down, in other words into the hands of the Vicar of Christ. The cord with the bows that unites the grips alludes to the bond between the two powers.
As a child he's locked in and raised in the infallibility of the Catholic church. Keep in mind this isn't current reality, he's remembering and this is a fantasy representation of nostalgia linking to the Golden Age childhood.
In his imagination he's imagining this epic attempt by Catholicism to keep him as a child "asleep" The shiny building at end represents a boy's view of what the church looks like.
When you see the child, this was the boy from very beginning of Golden age, when it showed the scanned 3d image of him as a man then reveals the little boy he was , still inside him.
We begin where last video left off. The boy "in reality perhaps older, but this is actually Woodkid still reminiscing seeing nostalgia with the vivid imagination of a boy".
The boy has woken up and runs away from the church, but that was just A church. We get visions of the Vatican who want to try and stop him as the lyrics of song say. Monsters & Demons like creatures spring up in chase, at first the boy has grown up warned of demons and the monsters outside the church that will get him. But the boy realizes they aren't demons at all and aren't trying to hurt him, they are helping him. They help him wage this mental war with his faith internally.
We hear ominous tones and the boy as if dead. This could be taken many ways, if you watched the long Golden Age intro video I think it just represents 2 things the loss of innocence and he's no longer reminiscing about childhood. Just as Golden age cuts were done in a way to represent memories, so Woodkid has focused his memory on being a young man, one who has loved (as shown in Golden Age) "the loss of innocence" with his first love, and the loss of this first love as many first relationships happen.
You will notice the man who talks to people then sits down to organ is same man from the very first Golden Age during the 3d scan it showed the man with the younger self inside him. This older man is the same guy from the scan. He's also briefly seen in the video Iron rapidly quoting scripture perhaps a glimpse of reality as the child "asleep" in Iron finally symbolically "wakes up".
This memory and song lyrics can be taken 2 ways, it has dual meaning done on purpose to create debate and controversy among fans.
While listening to lyrics you can take it that he fell in love but a breakup must have occurred and he's searching to get that love back..
We are in a more mature man's version of the crisis of coming to terms with the loss of his faith. The video begins in a small church, he speaks but not in english, what he tells the people in this small church translated into english is slightly cryptic, on purpose.
"Today I'm going to tell you a story, about a person who drowned in the cold ocean waters, after losing the one he loved. It's a story about a man person who died twice"
before his hands touch the organ he washes them in holy water and his face.
In the video you see a visual recreation of a famous paintings but replicated using whales, light, rock. This shape and swirling in ancient art represented "the tunnel of light" that's been described from near death experiences for thousands of years. But artistic license mixing religious symbology created this view of the moment of death.
From Dante Alighieri - Divine Comedy a book split into 3 parts ( Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso) Most everyone knows Dante's Inferno his descent into hell to find Beatrice his love, but he also entered Purgatory and then Paradise. This image is the famous artists portrayal of Dante & Beatrice passage to Paradise.
In video you will see this image recreated as the whales swirl around. Remember in Golden Age at the very beginning I mentioned keep eyes out for things in the peripheral. In the golden age you will see the boy laying down playing with whale toys above his head, and shining light through glass of water. Many things, actions, symbols from the Golden Age all appear throughout his videos.
Anyhow continuing with the 2nd meaning of this song the lyrics may continue his loss of faith and a growing realization. The lyrics he repeats
Whatever I feel for you
You only seem to care about you
Is there any chance you could see me too?
Cause I love you
Is there anything I could do
Just to get some attention from you?
In the waves I've lost every trace of you
Where are you?
And instead of rising when the famous image recreated by the whales he sinks, and when finished begins turning to stone. The video series ends here but the story continues in rest of the album.
The Eagles - The Journey of the Sorcerer
Released 1975, while not technically modern genres that split in 90s, stuff like this and Alan Parsons did influence the ambient, chill, trance movement that hit full force in 90s.
By the way as a bit of trivia, This is the original theme song to Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio series in 70s, and the television series in the 80s.
Coil - Where Even the Darkness is Something to See
The album name is Coil - Love's Secret Domain
They no longer exist and do not confuse Coil with Lacuna Coil. This Coil was the original.
Released in 1991, I actually own this entire album on vinyl, was a gift from old highschool sweetheart.
This genre in 91 was labeled as "Acid House, Experimental"
You will see why, entire album is extreme psychedelic for acid trippers, not exaggerating, this was made specifically for lsd, shrooms, ketamine tripping to produce intense synesthesia (ability to see music while tripping).
As you play this imagine being on lsd or shrooms, you will hear a point that sounds like people talking, its like you can almost make out what they are saying but can't. Well if you were tripping your mind under influence fills in the gaps of the voices and everyone hears a different message, all in your head of course , but very cool album.
I've had 1 acid trip in 90s only time I've had real lsd. This was my album I wanted to experience. The bass kicks almost felt like being hit with sound, the didgeridoo as it changed the walls would contract and expand in sync, and leaning back in recliner the ceiling was like record grooves as the grooves got further apart or closer together on the changes. Then the sound of the talking, it was like they were trying to get my attention, to point something out but I can't remember. After trip I wanted to go deeper as I had only 1 tab as a newbie, I wanted to try 2 or 3 at once but I couldn't find any more and I matured , had college, got married, etc life occurred ;-) But I'd definitely do it again with this album if I could.
The almost hearing what the voices say , in my opinion, is the greatest trick used for an awesome special effect that blows your mind when tripping.
Lionrock, trio of Justin Robertson, Roger Lyons and Buzz B, produced & released some wonderful hip-hop/swing, trance/hard-house and funky tracks that were very unique for that period's undergroud music releases.

This video is also taking 80s hit and remixed into dance house club track
By the way if this music video doesn't make you want to join an aerobics class, nothing will! These types of aerobics classes were huge in the 80s, Olivia Newton John and Fara Fawcett had aerobic vhs tapes. And all over late night infomercials in 80s. So I think that's what this mixes the 80s remixed with an updated sexier aerobics with 80s color/hair/dress style.
This aerobic instructor is hawt, I definitely need to find an aerobics class now
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (Stargate Remix)
Classified as Newwave this stretches my definition, but I wanted to include it for the amazing music video and to finish up my 3 piece set of remixed 80s tunes to modern day.
In the video set in like the Salem Witch trial type era, they had crazy folktale tests to test for a witch, anyhow their rope breaks and it turns out she was a witch and gets revenge.
