Can you recommend a Frank Zappa album?

http://www.zappa.com/fz/discography/

Holy shit, 102 albums. The most recent one in March.

I don't think this guy is gonna ever run out of material...

... he died WHEN?!

Wow.

Anyways, that's a LOT of music to wade through. Can anyone recommend a good place to start?

Hot Rats is a good one to start with, my personal fave, its mostly instrumental, Captain Beefheart singing on one track. Not really into Zappa's zany, humour stuff tbh, or any of his singing for that matter, kinda does my head in but I can happily listen to him widdle on his guitar all day long.

I was told I could probably skip Thingfish, it's a lot of reissues.

Joe's Garage. It offers a little bit of everything Zappa had to offer. It's hilarious, full of social commentary, and has ridiculous music from start to finish. Plus Ike Willis was the best vocalist Zappa ever worked with. Possibly my favorite album of all-time. Easily my most listened to.

Live at the Filmore East 1971 with Flo and Eddie from the Turtles is a hidden gem of a filthy rock opera I would highly recommend as well. For early Mothers-era stuff you can't go wrong with We're Only in it for the Money.

Start off with You Are What You Is and Joes Garage. If you don't like those 2, you won't like anything else he's ever done.
