I followed the criteria in the sense that Megadeth's first album only had 8 tracks. To be fair I did what half the other people here are doing, naming some of my favourite tracks that aren't labelled as the greatest hits. But I'll re-post adhering exactly to your rules then.

1. Mechanix
2. Peace Sells
3. In My Darkest Hour
4. Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
5. Tornado of Souls
6. Symphony of Destruction
7. A Tout le Monde
8. Trust

7, Orion
8, The Call of Ktulu
9, Suicide and Redemption
10, Wasted My Hate
11, Bleeding Me (SnM version)
12, The Struggle Within
13, Fixxxer
14, The Outlaw Torn
How have you got Suicide and Redemption on here but no Fade To Black? Also there isn't 14 tracks on Kill 'Em All there is 10 on the original recording. Here is a better list that you could actually define as a "Greatest hits" album.

1. The Four Horsemen
2. Seek & Destroy
3. For Whom The Bell Tolls
4. Fade To Black
5. Creeping Death
6. Master Of Puppets
7. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
8. One
9. Enter Sandman
10. Nothing Else Matters

I think the OP meant that the song has to be the same number as it was in its original album (i.e. if Seek & Destroy was number 9 on Kill Em All, it has to be number 9 in this 'best of' album and you have to pick between all the songs that were number 9 on all Metallica albums) and not that there has to be the same number of songs as on the band's first album. I may be wrong, though.

Re: make a bands greatest hits (with a twist)

This is a tough, tough one.

The Cure

1. Boys Don't Cry
2. Pictures of You
3. The Hanging Garden
4. Lovesong
5. The Last Day of Summer
6. Us Or Them
7. Fasination Street
8. Faith
9. The Same Deep Water As You
10. Disintegration
11. To Wish Impossible Things
12. Untitled
13. Trap
14. Going Nowhere

Toughest Choices:
#1: One Hundred Years got beat out by Boys Don't Cry.
#7: A Forest and Friday I'm in Love deserve a spot, but not over Fasicination Street.
#9: Just like Heaven should have made it, if it weren't for Cure's best song.
#11: Homesick juuuuust edged out by To Wish Impossible Things.

My Disintegration bias is obvious with this list.

This is correct.

You can put as many songs as are on the longest album, but each track has to be the same number as it was on the original album (you can't use a track number for a best of album).

And just to be a little more clear, they don't have to be hits per say, just your greatest hits meaning your favorite songs from the band.

That is pretty much spot on what I would have from Gnr but I would add a few more tracks to get Coma in there. But the 12 you have are pretty much the perfect Gnr album.
