Default The State of the Mafia Section

Things are not looking very good for out mafia section at the moment. We've been having a tough time getting sign ups and the people that do sign up aren't playing. I think the last game only had 18 players and people that died had to rep back in.

I just want to get a consensus about what we should do about this. If we say that we're just going to stop running games for a while that's fine. I just don't think we should let things stay like they are because the whole section appears to just be in limbo right now and that's not good for anyone.

I suspect it is just general burnout, or the start of school for you kiddies.

Some things that might help(and all personal opinion)
1. Getting a host list that is updated regularly. IE - I didn't know flash was even on the list, let alone his theme. I know we are working on this, and that the supply of hosts isn't really as big an issue right now, but I think it will help get people excited about future games.

2. Make sure themes are going to get enough interest. There was a time where I would jump into any mafia game just for the sake of playing mafia. I'm to the point now that I'm only wanting to play in games where I'm interested in the theme.

3. Not having non-active, barely active people in the games. This drags the games down. Sure they can be replaced, but anyone replacing in is now:
a) 2+ phases behind
b) Someone already killed, who might of been killed for the sheer fact he was nailing scum, and now is right back in the game. Not to mention re-introducing any role information that should have died with him. and/or
c) Immediately under fire for why the person they replaced didn't play the game.. be it cause he like to play as town/mafia more etc... which is more speculation than scum hunting.

I think some players get turned off at how we can be such assholes to each other.

Default Re: The State of the Mafia Section

It's a little bit of burnout, probably, as well as it being a busy time of year for a lot of people.

But all of that is also kind of indicative of the section's failure to bring enough new players in to keep things running smoothly when the more active users bow out for a while.

There's no real reason that we should be struggling to bring in new players, imo. Mafia's a fun game, and it's probably most fun when you're just starting out and everything is shiny and new. On that end, we can probably do a better job of encouraging new players to keep playing rather than putting them down for being new.

I think there are also different segments of veteran players that need to be catered to as well. Some players have played more mafia than anyone should reasonably play in their lifetime and can rarely be bothered to participate. Some play all the time regardless of game. Some tend to get burned out after more than 2-3 games in a row and tend to pick their spots, whether that's based on theme or an interesting twist in the gameplay (I fall into this group).

So, maybe there needs to be more variety. Maybe gameplay needs to be tweaked more often. Maybe the games need to be modded more tightly. Maybe we just need more new players (and to be more accommodating towards them). I don't know what the answer is. It's probably some combination of at least a few of those things and maybe some others that I haven't even mentioned.

I might have to save this section with another Community game.

Completely ignoring new players thoughts+opinions probably turns them off from continuing to play. we had quite a few active new players that just stopped playing, manure/trousers/etc, so asking them why they stopped might not be a bad idea.

the section had regular new members when flaming was allowed and people were actually being assholes to each other.

"you suck at mafia"

doesn't compare to

"are you seriously this fucking retarded? it's obvious i'm town, you're just a moron that can't read me properly. you can go fuck yourself for voting me"

just sayin' i don't think that's the problem.

^if you look at that page and a few before it you'll see that the section had the same problem then. the regular, active players were burning out and there was a struggle to get a lot of sign ups.

how did they fix it? by getting lucky. shortly after that page cp, pez, and myself started playing, as well as shep who just started playing, and we were all some of the most active players in the games. lc/gambit are the only 2 consistently super active players we've gotten since then which is why we're struggling now as pez/shep stopped playing and cp isnt nearly as active as he once was.

I really don't think there's any type of solution we can come up with to fix the inactiveness, basically just gotta hope for new, active players that will stay interested.

Not allowing replacements might be part of the problem. I started getting killed early after my first game, but would usually rep in once or twice after my first death and keep playing. If I always died early without getting another chance to play I'd probably be turned off of mafia.

New players certainly aren't sticking around and that does seem like a problem.

From what I've seen I see that a lot of people are talking about not having the time to play and I wonder if we can fix that by slowing down games? I mean right now you pretty much have to post every single day if you want to play in this section. I can see why people would have a problem with that kind of time commitment. I'm not sure if I like the idea of slower games but I wonder if it would help others out. I'm not saying that we have 3 month long day phases like Mafia Scum (or whatever that place is called) but could slowing things down work? Or maybe change the game so you can't post during night phases. It would give people some extra time to catch up and they wouldn't be able to fall further behind.

I know there are times when I don't have the time to play and part of me thinks that those ideas I just gave would help a little bit.

not sure what the problem is but i like the idea of not being able to talk at night.

we just need to keep things new and have cool setups, and flash's theme is probably the WOAT so that doesn't help either.
