I started playing seriously far too early. My plan of fluff/spam/scumminess didn't get me to the end game.

that plan never works, i perfected it at one point. i guess times changed b/c throughout all my antics i'm still seen as a threat. this game would have been a turning point as the mafia didn't attempt to kill me as often as i though they would. winning the game though negates that and put me as a threat, especially when you do it by yourself.
