The 2008 matches were pretty great, but these two never put together a match that almost unaminously is looked upon as a true MOTYC. I hope that they do before they retire.
I know what you mean, but I don't quite agree.
The first match at Slammiversary '08 was just a very simple one one one match. It was very good, but it was not the classic everyone expected. The rematch at Hard Justice '08 had the advantage of the stipulation, and was an amazing match.
I think the match in October '09 on the iMPACT! right before Bound for Glory was really great, only hampered by the lack of ending. The 1/4 match is a ton of fun, regardless of the complete lack of storytelling. It's the Genesis match that I think just drags on forever and really never justifies being 28 minutes long. It's like TNA figured Kurt Angle and AJ Styles wrestling for nearly 1/2 hour was going to be good no matter what the match.
For anyone interested, check the little match they had on "The Whole F'N Show" back in August. It was about 8 minutes long, all action, storytelling, and a great ending.
