Ratings for BFG Main Events
1) Jeff Jarrett vs. Rhino - **1/4
For the amount of time they had, and the fact that Rhino had already been in two other matches that night, it made sense for this match to be sure. In fact, I think it worked better than it was. It would have under-mined Rhino's fight if it had been a long match. He's only overcoming all odds if they does it quickly. Otherwise, he's just some guy who can't be beaten. A fun brawl, with a feel-good ending.
2) Jeff Jarrett vs. Sting - **3/4
The beginning of this match is odd. Jarrett positively OWNS Sting, which always reeked of politics to me. It was like "sure, I'll finally drop the title to you after 10 months, but it won't be easy." This was a classic main event, nothing more.
3) Kurt Angle vs. Sting - ****
Easily Sting's best match in TNA, the best BFG main event ever, and one of the most intense matches in TNA history. I mean, this match just felt huge, and it was at what many consider the best TNA PPV ever. Great storytelling, fun, and a good ending. I love this match. I wish they had a rematch like it.
4) Samoa Joe vs. Sting - **1/2
Here's where Sting's streak bothered me. Jarrett didn't need to beat Sting. He was already a main-eventer in TNA and had beaten him two ppvs prior. Angle didn't need to beat him either. He was established as a super main-eventer, and would beat him a week later on TV anyway. But Joe NEEDED to beat Sting. It was his first title reign, and he hadn't pinned anyone cleanly during his title reign, save for Scott Steiner and Bobby Roode, and even that match he needed help. He couldn't beat Booker T, Angle, etc. Sting was his ultimate challenge, and he failed. The argument could be made that Joe beat Joe, but the ending pissed me off. I also never thought much of this match. Typical brawl, but Joe makes it work.
5)AJ Styles vs. Sting - ***
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is an unfinished match. These two have a great opening sequence, trade multiple counters in the middle, and are on their way to having one of the best matches of the year, and then it ends out of NOWHERE. These guys set a pace for a match they didn't intend to have. The respect in the match is beautiful, but the competition is intense, and Styles carries Sting to heights only Angle has reached. Judging by their pace, I would have guessed that before the match ended, it had another 10 minutes to go. But it didn't. It just ended. With a frog splash. Not the 450 splash that won AJ the title. Not the spiral tap. Not the styles clash. A move that isn't even his finisher. The crowd is silent, as they are taken aback that the main event of the biggest show in TNA history ended out of nowhere (this was the theme of the night, btw). Shame these two will never get a rematch.
