Gimp can be good if used correctly. Takes much longer to make quality work though. Better off going with PS in the long run.

Slow day at work. I was allowed to dick about in Photoshop. Decided to try to make a sig and avatar for Naoto Shirogane, a character from Persona 4 Golden, AKA my current video game obsession. First try ever what.

Recently got PS and was wondering if you guys knew of any good beginners tutorials? I'm most interested in making graphics (like the sigs on here), but obviously need to learn all the basics and get familiar with the program.

I've never watched a tutorial other than how to do the 'Obama Hope' poster effect and didn't even finish watching it, lol. A$AP isn't big on tutorials either we're into experimentation more than anything. That's a slower process but it's also a bit more rewarding. There is a really good tutorial by Tenacious C on here if you want to use it, it will help you get the basics down. Otherwise just browse Youtube for some tutorials.
Tools to help you along the way.
www.psd-dreams.de - for PSD's
www.dafont.com - for fonts
www.textureking.com - for a few textures ( I usually google them )
EDIT: Was making food whilst replying and it looks like Awsmash has already led you to a couple of sites.

Get some Photoshop books, I learned a shitload from them. Videos are great too, make sure you find ones that are from professionals as they go into much greater detail of the techniques they are using.
