One for me was back in 2008 and Jamie Noble was getting this midcard push on Raw. I remember him being a face and tapping people out with an armbar. He got into a feud with William Regal after Layla sided with Regal for some reason. I remember rooting for Noble during this time cause he was a really solid wrestler and pretty entertaining IMO. Eventually this was all dropped and he returned to a jobber heel before getting his career "ended" by Sheamus.
Looking back now, it was pretty surreal to see that WWE tried pushing this guy as a face.
What are some other obsecure moments that you remember in WWE history?
Now that I mention it, Regals King of the Ring/GM push in 2008 was pretty surreal aswell. I am bummed that he never got that main event push that he deserved. I know he got suspended but lets rule that out... JBL came from out of nowhere and became WWE Champion. I see no reason why Regal couldn't have done the same. I remember he was in total control of the show, switching off the lights to tremendous heat. He was on his way to greatness and then... nothing
Keep in mind 2008 was a weird year for WWE all round; Charlie Haas' impersonator gimmick, The Brian Kendrick, Kane's sack and Mike Adamle as GM. I kinda miss it...
Teddy Long recreating The Montreal Screwjob with CM Punk and Undertaker. The segment where Undertaker kidnapped Teddy Long was cringe-worthy.That pathetic storyline pretty much signalled the death of Smackdown
Wasn't that on Sunday Nigh Heat? God I remember that too. I actually follow Val on Facebook- Sean Morley. We've talked a couple of times on facebook. He's a huge pothead, which I support because it's a million times better than getting hooked on oxycontin and OD'ing on prescription pills. He's also a huge libertarian- like, no stop signs libertarian. He's tight though.
I remember John Morrison nearly getting his face ripped off by a ladder. The Punjabi Prison as well. I saw that thing and thought it was going to be awesome. How naive I was.
That was actually Joey Mercury, who was Morrison's tag partner at the time.
I remember JR as a heel back in 1996, after it was revealed that he brought the fake Diesel and Razor characters into the WWF. That storyline went nowhere and was quickly dropped.
In 1991 Greg Valentine was feuding with Jimmy Hart and Earthquake. Earthquake kept on squashing Valentine and this masked guy kept on coming out to make the save. Valentine had no allies at the time so their wasn't even someone you could take an educated guess on. Valentine and Earthquake had an otherwise pointless Wrestlemania match that seemed like its entire purpose was for the masked man to make the save.
It was a basic squash match. Dude never showed and was never mentioned again.
This whole scenario lingered in my head for years. Who was the guy and why didn't he show?
Many years later I got to the bottom of it. Brutus Beefcake was supposed to make his triumphant return from facial reconstructive surgery and make the save for his former Dream Team partner. Medical staff decided at the last minute that he wasn't ready and the whole angle was scrapped.
Anyway...the GTV angle in 1999. It's pretty infamous and not exactly obscure, but it went for months and months, and then just disappeared. There was no big reveal or anything.
The Jackyl was the original manager of The Acolytes, and I was hoping he'd stick around in some capacity, but he left to join ECW if I remember correctly. It was the same with The Oddities...he managed them for a month or two, then inexplicably they come out one week as goofy babyfaces with Sable as their manager. Slightly baffling.
I remember that Noble push. Pretty sure he had a feud with biker Chuck Palumbo over on Smackdown over Michaele McCool during that time too. Aw man, I miss midcard feuds.
Simon Dean was awesome.
Vito the crossdresser storyline? He got pretty over too during that time and had a nice undefeated streak going, but ended up going nowhere. Sylvan the Ambassador of Canada was another one that went nowhere. Sylvester Turky teaming with Elijah Burke, Gunner Scott, Jimmy Wang Yang the Asian *******, all in recent memory. You could just go on and on really.
Further back? Uh... Al Snow wrestling himself. The Squad #1 and 2 I think they were called, two short masked guys came out during a Royal Rumble and did nothing else ever again. Goldust becoming Blue Meanie's "mommy". And I'm pretty sure Booker T still owes Randy Orton that favor...
Mordecai... His debut was built up pretty well, people thought he was gonna feud with Eddie & then go after Taker. The guy wrestled a couple of matches, the whole angle was dropped & he returned a few years later as a second rate Gangrel. Very odd.
