Pops don't mean anything in the long run. Hulk Hogan's old decrepit ass gets huge pops on Impact. But he doesn't do jack shit for ratings.
TV ratings, buyrates, and merch sales are all indicators of how big a star someone really is. And that's what Dave is talking about here.
Since it was heavily promoted as Punk's first match after a long time off, it should have done a much better buyrate. If so many people really liked him so much.
I would almost guarantee that if Cena was held off tv for a couple of months, then his return was heavily hyped to be on a PPV, the buyrate would go up.
And I say that as someone who is a huge fan of Punk and not too big of a Cena fan.
