Why did Rock make it as a movie star, but Austin didn't?

Austin was bigger than The Rock. But Rock makes it in Hollywood. Why was that? I remember first watching Walking Tall and thinking to myself, Austin would've made a much better Sheriff. He even used it as a gimmick in his final years. It's not because Rock was bigger than Austin, so lets nip that right in the bud straight away. Austin was without question only rivalled by Hogan.

Was it because of Austin 'taking his ball and going home' (As Undertaker put it)? Was it because he knocked the shit out of Debra?

Just because you were a bigger star doesn't mean you'll make it in Hollywood. Hollywood just buys The Rock (and by judging how much the dude makes year, so do fans of his acting).

Because the rock went into kids movies to make it big while Austin just took B action movies that mostly go straight to DVD. Even though the rocks movies were awful (to us anyway) kids loved his disney movies.

The rocks action movies still are pretty crappy as is are his comedies. But he got big because of crap like witch mountain and the toothfairy which little kids love

Because Austin can't act. All he can play is Steve Austin. In every single movie he's done he's exactly the same. The Rock suffered from that for the first few years of his Hollywood career, but broke away. Like, The Scorpion King wasn't The Scorpion King, it was The Scorpion Rock.

There's definitely something to the roles and movie choices. The Rock has done his share of action movies, but he's also done a number of comedic roles and kids movies as well. I'm fairly certain Austin has said in interviews that while action movies is his niche, he'd like to try doing other roles, but he just doesn't seem to go after them or be offered those parts. He just signed a new multi-film deal and it's basically just for more direct-to-DVD action films. Though he only had a secondary role, I was hoping The Expendables would be the start of something good for Austin's movie career, but it wasn't followed up with anything substantial.

The Rock has a better look for today's society. Stone cold looks too "redneckish", so outside of the wrestling world, he didn't have that much appeal.

Rock was more determined to make it. I think his goal is to win an oscar in the future. Austin just seemed to make movies for something to do..

Re: Why did Rock make it as a movie star, but Austin didn't?

It's cause The Rock is more entertaining actor than Austin. Austin had the outspoken/controversial character, but Rock had the entertaining one.

Just cause you're good in one thing, doesn't mean it'll transfer over into something else.

That'd be like saying that any good sports player can be a coach. Or any good star on a tv show can have successful acting career. There's many people who were stars of tv shows that lasted well over 100 episodes, yet they're never able to find any medium-large role ever again.

This.

If Austin would of been around in the 80's and received his break there he would of been a huge movie star but unfortunately for him he's a victim of the times now in today's overly metrosexual "feminine" Hollywood.
