Re: Grading Cena As A Performer
I've never heard Cena be a 10 on the mic. I've never heard him be Raven, Roberts, Flair at his height in the Nature Boy Schtick, Foley in character at his height (anti-hardcore, cane dewey, uncle willy, j.r. interviews) Austin 3:16 and feuding with Angry Vince, The Rock at his height, etc.
At his best he can cut a serviceable, compelling promo that PROMOTES THE MATCH or just be goofy and funny like Rapper Cena.
I think Cena has a low ceiling and unfathomably low basement. I don't know if I've ever heard Cena do a 10 but every single year I see him
do legitimate 1s on the mic. Star Wars, loooooooser, barbecue sauce thing with Michael Cole, "I bet you had a great Sunday!"
I don't know if I've EVER seen him have a 10, a true 10. I know I've seen him have 1s every year.
I'd say 10 percent of the time a 1, 40 percent of the time a who gives a shit 5 (most promos are this, not a dig on Cena), 30 percent of the time a notch above that, a 6 or 7, 20 percent of the time a 7.5 to 8.
To me, most Cena matches are "Cena matches." 80 percent of Cena matches are not that good. He can go above the "Cena-Match" and a few times in a year he goes balls out and has a superb match. The vast majority of his work is a 4, he can hit you off with an 8 and every now and again he can have a 10. His floor is higher and his ceiling is 10/5 star match territory.
I think Cena is like a 5 or 6 promo wise, maybe an overall 6 or 7 in the ring. He just is not good enough to merit multiple Rumble wins and 20 championship belts in 10 years. He just isn't.
