The guy can talk, he's a real natural storyteller. It's more the content of his promos that let him down.
What about the Umaga match?

He's a very talented wrestler. It's his gimmick that's keeping him down.
Sum it up personal even if I would rather his in ring skills. It not the man that people hate it is the gimmick. The man himself is a top talent.

Re: Grading Cena As A Performer

I've never heard Cena be a 10 on the mic. I've never heard him be Raven, Roberts, Flair at his height in the Nature Boy Schtick, Foley in character at his height (anti-hardcore, cane dewey, uncle willy, j.r. interviews) Austin 3:16 and feuding with Angry Vince, The Rock at his height, etc.

At his best he can cut a serviceable, compelling promo that PROMOTES THE MATCH or just be goofy and funny like Rapper Cena.
I think Cena has a low ceiling and unfathomably low basement. I don't know if I've ever heard Cena do a 10 but every single year I see him
do legitimate 1s on the mic. Star Wars, loooooooser, barbecue sauce thing with Michael Cole, "I bet you had a great Sunday!"
I don't know if I've EVER seen him have a 10, a true 10. I know I've seen him have 1s every year.

I'd say 10 percent of the time a 1, 40 percent of the time a who gives a shit 5 (most promos are this, not a dig on Cena), 30 percent of the time a notch above that, a 6 or 7, 20 percent of the time a 7.5 to 8.

To me, most Cena matches are "Cena matches." 80 percent of Cena matches are not that good. He can go above the "Cena-Match" and a few times in a year he goes balls out and has a superb match. The vast majority of his work is a 4, he can hit you off with an 8 and every now and again he can have a 10. His floor is higher and his ceiling is 10/5 star match territory.

I think Cena is like a 5 or 6 promo wise, maybe an overall 6 or 7 in the ring. He just is not good enough to merit multiple Rumble wins and 20 championship belts in 10 years. He just isn't.

Good post, disagree, but I appreciate someone who can make good reasons behind their posts without coming off as bias.

Re: Grading Cena As A Performer

Mic Skills:
Worst: 3/10
Best: 7/10

Wrestling Ability
Worst:4/10
Best: 8/10

Overall (Average):
Worst: 3.5/10
Best: 7.5/10

At worst, his promos can be really childish and very cringeworthy. When he phones it in during a match, such as Cena vs. Miz at WM 27, he is terrible at no selling and the match is unbearable.

At best, when he has a big match with a great performer, he can put on a 4 or 5 star match. When he actually tries to do a great promo, he can really hit the mark and I rank him with the very best of mic guys, even though that seems to be a rare occasion.

Re: Grading Cena As A Performer

In ring performer: 7-7.5/10. He's not perfect in the ring, but he's not bad.

Cena's WWE character: 2.5-3/10. His cheesy, corny, goofball ass WWE character is what brings him down.

If 5/10 is average I don't know how you could put cena below that in either Mic or wrestling ability.
Think of a consistantly average wrestler and Cena shits on them. As for the 2/10s etc that's like rookie level ability, just a joke to claim he's that bad.

Cena is a 6/10 worker most nights and a 9/10 on his best. The same can probably be said for his promos but drops to maybe 5/10.

So I think averaging him at 8/10 and 7/10 respectively is fair.
